6 Tribal Border Infrastructure eligible projects: This program funds high priority wastewater and drinking water infrastructure projects on federally-recognized Indian lands within 62 miles (100 kilometers) of the U.S. / Mexico Border. Examples of high priority wastewater and drinking water infrastructure projects that may be funded but are not limited to: Drinking water projects New wells to replace contaminated sources New water storage tanks to provide needed capacity Treatment/disinfection systems to ensure compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act New distribution systems s to replace old, small diameter lines susceptible e to contamination Wastewater projects Collection systems to replace failing individual septic tanks and pit privies Wastewater treatment facilities Repair or replacement of cracked sewer lines

9 Measurable Results 2/3 of the 39 projects are complete or under construction For $2,938 per home, these projects provide 7,888 homes with safe drinking water 1,777 homes with basic sanitation

10 TBI FY 10 Solicitation Request for Proposals (RFP) will be available by March Up to $1.5 million will be available Will fund 3-6 projects

11 Clean Water Act Set-Aside Program Construction of a new sewer service line Susanville Rancheria

12 Region 9 Program Process Region 9 uses the Indian Health Service s (IHS) Sanitation Deficiency System Lists (SDS) to identify high priority wastewater projects for funding in each IHS Areas. (CA, Navajo, Tucson and Phoenix) To be considered for funding, proposed wastewater projects must be placed on the IHS SDS list. (Submission of proposals is not required.)

13 (continued) Each year EPA R9 in coordination with the IHS Regional Areas select projects, based on the SDS ranking and available funding. When eligible projects are selected, EPA notifies the Tribes. Funding options are Interagency Agreements (IAs) with IHS or Direct Grants.
