Grosse Ile High School Ready! Set! Improve!
Goals of the session Share strategies schools have used to improve student achievement with hopes that we can all improve education results for students Share readily available technology (this is not a sales pitch for some new expensive program) to help digital learners Idea exchange -- we d love to hear what you are doing that we can take back to GIHS!
First, a little bit about us GI is a great place to live! GIHS is a great place to learn! (for about 650 students) Grosse Ile is an island in the Detroit River at the mouth of Lake Erie
Grosse Ile High School Your friendly presenters: Jim Stewart Principal Joel Fabris Assistant Principal Jennifer Kinsland School Improvement Chair
How has GIHS used technology to accelerate school improvement? Network architecture (internal communication) Website (external communication) Moodle (online pacing guide) Smart rooms (instructional technology) e2020 (guided online credit recovery) Online courses (recovery & acceleration) Zangle (student database system, int/ext) MiStar/Pulse (academic intervention) Coming Soon (SchoolConnect App; ipads; more!)
Grosse Ile HS 96% 4-year graduation rate 95% go to college Continuous improvement EFFORTS Have lead to improvement RESULTS! Safe and orderly environment Reeves: The most important thing is data Focus on LEARNING for Each & Every student Becoming a Professional Learning Community (Use of specific proven strategies to improve) Technology - digital methods to reach digital learners
Grosse Ile High School One of America s best high schools --Newsweek, 2011, 2012, & 2013!!! Composite English Math Reading Science ACT scores,
GIHS Points of Pride Okay, data which data? MME, ACT/PLAN, SAT/PSAT, MEAP, AP, etc. Graduation Rate (GIHS has been Top Ten in Michigan among schools with at least 100 student sheer effort on the part of every adult; Todd Whittaker: the students are the constant, the adults are the variable ) Academic performance (course failure, honors, etc.) Student attendance, behavior Enrollment in college and successful completion of first year ( persistence ) If you don t know Go there today!
Our improvement results are due to the right people doing the right work the Grosse Ile High School staff! GIHS is a Professional Learning Community!
Professional Learning Community What do we want each student to know and be able to do? (Curriculum & clear learning targets) How will we know whether each student has learned? (Communicating assessment data) What do we do then for each student by name and by need? (Targeted instruction and intervention)
It is more difficult to become a PLC than it will be to be one. GIHS in 2008 GIHS in 2012(?) We are better together!

Instructional Technology How are you using available technology? (Computers, laptops, SMART boards, ELMO s, clickers, slates/ipads, cell phones, etc.) Todd Whitaker (What Great Teachers Do Differently): Each of us can think of many innovations that were touted as the answer in education we must keep in mind that programs are never the solution, and they are never the problem it s people, not programs (and) it s not what you do, it s how you do it.
When it comes to using technology to improve student achievement, we are building the airplane while it s flying. How do we create an environment at school where students and teachers are not afraid to make a mistake?
Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important. Bill Gates Does it make sense to use analog methods to reach digital learners?
Are students more engaged when they are using technology?
Credit Recovery Summer school wasn t working (shrinking budget & increasing rigor under the MMC) Retake it next year does not lead to on time graduation So e2020 GIHS Assistance courses offered in our seven-period day
