1 1 Accountant Admin & IT A music organisation accountant is a qualified professional responsible for record keeping associated with income and expenditure, the preparation of accounts and tax information and for preparing company returns and other financial data. 2 Agent Business & Management Agents in the music industry are employed by performers or by their managers to represent their client performers, supplying their artists for corporate, public and private events and interfacing to publicists and PR officers. 3 Artist And Repertoire Executive Business & Management A&R executives are responsible to music organisations for talent scouting, negotiating contracts and overseeing the development of recording artists and songwriters. They also liaise between artists and record companies for all activity involving artists up to the point of music release. 4 Artistic Director Production Artistic directors in music parallel the work of artistic directors in theatre, ballet and modern dance. They are responsible for making the creative decisions associated with large-scale live performances, ensure that bands and ensembles maintains their artistic vision and repertoire. 5 Booking Agent Admin & IT Booking agents, also known as bookers or in-house promoters, book performers for one or more specific music venues for which they work as an employee or as a self-employed consultant. Most booking agents do this on a part-time basis and many are musicians. 6 Box Office Agent Admin & IT Box office staff work in cinemas, theatres and concert halls. They are responsible for taking bookings and payments for tickets. Box office staff also arrange for group visits and discounts and advise on seating for people with disabilities or special needs. 7 Busker Performance Buskers perform music on the streets, usually at regular locations outside or inside shopping centres. Their income is in the form of voluntary donations from passers-by. Depending on local by-laws, buskers may be licenced or unlicensed and subject to a variety of restrictions. 8 Choreographer Production Choreographers create routines and movement sequences for singers, musicians and dancers to perform at live music events, in film, video and television studios, and for live streaming on the internet. 9 Classical Musician Performance Classical musicians perform, compose or conduct classical music. They are trained to an extremely high standard in vocals or in one or more instruments. They may also record classical music, undertake session work for backing tracks, conduct performances and/or write music. 10 Community Musician Performance Community musicians work with individuals or groups in the community to make music, functioning as a cross between community development workers and music tutors, with a responsibility to achieve social goals through musical activity. 11 Composer Production Music composers write new scores for individuals, groups and orchestras. They apply knowledge of musical elements such as rhythm, melody and texture to their work. Some composers also write songs and lyrics. 12 Conductor Performance Conductors help vocal and instrumental ensembles to interpret and perform pieces of music. They prepare a musical score based on their idea of how the music should sound and lead an ensemble in its performance, ensuring that members play and sing well together. 13 Disk Jockey Performance A disk jockey (DJ) plays recorded music, normally at a nightclub, bar, private party or broadcast media, using vinyl records, CDs, tapes or digital audio files. The traditional setup includes physical media and turntables, although many now use CDJs or digital mixing software.

They work in music-related venues and at special events to enable visitors to ensure an educational experience. 15 Entertainer Performance Musical entertainers perform up-beat and crowd-pleasing music - often covers of well-known and wellliked songs - to audiences at live and recorded events. Unlike singer-songwriters, whose driving force is to perform their own music, the driver for entertainers is to entertain. 16 Event Production Assistant Business & Management Event production assistants support production managers in the management of live music events such as concerts and festivals. They help co-ordinate and organise stage management, promotion, performers, vendors, security and others involved in the music events. 17 Graphic designer PR, Sales & Marketing Graphic designers work for artists, venues, record companies and other organisations to produce graphical material for PR, sales and marketing. The designer's output may include logos, posters, flyers, banners, online graphics and other material for publicity and promotion. 18 Instrument And Audio Equipment Distributor PR, Sales & Marketing Musical instrument and audio equipment distributors ensure that these products are made available to retail stores from instrument makers and factories, handling locally source and imported products. They also inform retailers on the availability of instrument and equipment. 19 Instrument Coach Education & Training Instrument coaches work with individuals or groups to improve their clients' technique and level of competence on a given instrument or group of related instruments with which the coach is a virtuoso performer. They are distinguished from music teachers by their level of specialism. 20 Instrument Maker Production Musical instrument makers produce and maintain instruments, many also carrying out repair work. They usually produce a range of instruments, while specialising in a single instrument or an entire class such as reeds, or brass. In the music world, this can mean event tickets, access to artists, VIP entry, etc.

This may be a separate role for major events, with lighting engineers and technicians delivering the design, or may be one part of the lighting engineer's role. 28 Lighting Engineer Engineering & Operations Lighting engineers set up and operate the lighting and associated equipment for live and recorded events. At larger events, they work with lighting designers, lighting technicians and riggers. Promoters are responsible for publicising the event and ensuring maximum attendance. 43 Publicist PR, Sales & Marketing Publicists cultivate and maintain the image of performers, representing them to the media, producing press releases, speeches, newsletters, material for websites and social media. They arrange and attend press launches, news conferences, exhibitions and sponsorship events. 44 Publisher Production Music publishers develop and protect the music created by songwriters and composers. They are specially trained and highly qualified in order to carry out these activities safely, without risk to performers, crew or public. 46 Record Label Manager Business & Management A record label manager co-ordinates all aspects of the production of records on a particular label, including production budgets, marketing, contracts, recording sessions, photoshoots and videoshoots. They sell instruments, equipment, physical media, download products, audio and video streaming services, literature and other music-related items and are responsible for the commercial success of the store. 49 Returns Manager Admin & IT A returns manager is responsible for handling the customer service process by which faulty or unwanted musical instruments, equipment, event tickets and other music-related products are repaired, replaced or refunded. 50 Rigger Engineering & Operations Riggers work with complex audio and visual installations at music events. They locate and fix lighting, audio and video equipment often above ground and stage level; using ropes, booms, lifts, hoists and other tools to move and constrain the often heavy equipment. 51 Road Manager Engineering & Operations Road managers, or 'roadies', get performers and their equipment to gigs. They drive the artists to venues and unload their equipment, sometimes carrying out initial setup. After gigs they pack equipment and transport it and the performers to overnight accommodation or the next venue. 52 Sales Assistant PR, Sales & Marketing Music sales staff work for retail managers in music stores, selling directly to customers, offering advice, and demonstrating instruments and equipment. They may also work at call centres, selling and advising over the phone, or for wholesale suppliers, selling to retailers.

5 53 Security Officer Business & Management Security officers provide security services at live music events, protecting equipment and installations, controlling access, resolving disputes, protecting performers and crew and ensuring public safety. 54 Singer-songwriter Performance Singer-songwriters perform music that they have composed to audiences at live and recorded events. Unlike entertainers, who perform up-beat and crowd-pleasing covers and whose driving force is to entertain, the driver for singer-songwriters is to expand the fanbase for their music. 55 Singing Coach Education & Training Singing coaches, also known as vocal coaches, work with individuals or groups of singers to help develop and improve the singing ability and technique of their clients. They often guide their students through performance qualifications such as ABRSM grades. 56 Songwriter Production Songwriters compose lyrics, melodies and chord progressions for solo artists, bands and other ensembles.
