If the number of times that interest is compounded in a year is n, then the interest rate per compounding period is n (where r is the annual interest rate), and the number of times that interest is compounded in t years is nt. Interest that is compounded daily has 365 (or 366) compounding periods per year. Interest that is compounded continuously has, theoretically, infinitely many compounding periods per year.
