2 Spotlight on an Institutional Research Legend Dr. James W. Firnberg received his bachelor s degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), his masters in educational administration and doctorate in education with an emphasis in educational research and higher education, with a minor in speech communication, from Louisiana State University and A&M College. After three years teaching in East Baton Rouge Parish Schools he joined the staff at Louisiana State University in During his tenure at LSU he served in a number of administrative positions including a staff position in the Bureau of Testing and Guidance, Assistant Registrar for Institutional Research, Director of Institutional Research on the Baton Rouge Campus and the LSU System. He was a Professor in the College of Education and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs for the LSU System. In 1984 he was appointed Chancellor at Louisiana State University at Alexandria. He retired in 1989 with the titles of Professor Emeritus at LSU A&M and Chancellor Emeritus at LSU at Alexandria. While at LSU he was active in the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He served two terms on the Commission and one term on the Executive Council and has made numerous accreditation visits. In 1992 after three years as a consultant in higher education, he was named the founding President of Our Lady of the Lake College in Baton Rouge and served in that position until mid He was accorded the President Emeritus title upon retirement. From mid1989 until December 2011 he served as a consultant for the National Science Foundation working with that organization on projects to improve the quality, timeliness, and usability of the Foundation s university surveys (Research and Development Expenditures and the Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates). He had a three-year assignment with NSF s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and conducted administrative [2]

3 reviews of the EPSCoR operation in 22 jurisdictions including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. His work with NSF has taken him to all 50 states and over 200 major universities in the United States. For five years he served as a consultant on a USAID project to develop a college in Port Antonio, Jamaica. In addition, he has assisted numerous colleges and universities in the areas of accreditation, planning, management, and institutional research. Dr. Firnberg is a Charter Member of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and has been active in that organization since He has served on numerous committees and has given papers, served on panels, and participated in more than 40 Forums. He served as president of AIR in , received the Outstanding Service Award in 1985, and was named a Distinguished Member in He helped organize both the Louisiana Association of Institutional Research and the Southern Association of Institutional Research. He has remained active in the LSU System and has a part time appointment as Special Assistant to the vice president for academic affairs of the LSU System. He is one of the very few who have been associated with LSU on and off for over 50 years. He is currently serving on the LSU Transition Advisory Team and chairs the Research and Discovery sub-committee. The TAT is charged in making recommendations to the LSU Board of Supervisors to transition the LSU System to One LSU or LSU He is on the Board of Directors of Ollie Steele Manor and serves on the Finance Committee. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge and has been a member of numerous other civic and charitable organizations. In 2012 he was names Outstanding Alumnus of the LSU College of Education. Use Access to manage and report institutional data and surveys. Respond quickly and precisely to data requests. The following topics will be covered: importing and linking data sets, using calculations in queries, updating and appending tables, union queries, creating macros, and developing point and click reports and sub reports. Data sets used may include IPEDS, NSF, Census, SREB and Board of Regents data. Customized examples will be used and explored. This workshop is designed for those with prior experience using Microsoft Access. Participants should be familiar with tables and queries. Technology Park New Comers Workshop This workshop is designed for practitioners who are new to the field of institutional research. The workshop will address the issues such as the definition of IR and how IR offices work, identifying data sources and collecting data, developing fact books and peer comparisons, federal and state reporting, and the role of IR in accountability/accreditation and strategic planning. 5 3:15-5:00 Assessment Workshop This workshop will focus on how to make assessment a part of a campus culture. It will focus on assessment for the purpose of continuous improvement. Some campuses get so focused on the needs of various accreditation agencies and government requirements, that the true reason for assessment is lost. The speaker will focus on various assessment methods, building an effective assessment system, getting buy in for assessment, and meaningful use of results. Of course, accreditation will be addressed. Participants will gain a better understanding of assessing their own areas, as well as their role in assessment at the university level. Board of Regents Conference Room Basic Statistics Workshop This workshop will cover basic statistical principles and procedures for Institutional Researchers who do not have a statistics or other research-related educational background. Software will be limited to Excel. Topics to be covered include descriptive statistics, effectively and accurately displaying and summarizing data, simple linear regression, multiple regression analysis, and hypothesis testing.
