1 Otago Medical School and Division of Health Sciences Collaborative Research Grants Guidelines and Application Format, 2016 Closing Date Monday October 3 rd 2016 Purpose To foster new collaborations between the schools of the Otago Medical School (Dunedin School of Medicine, Otago School of Medical Sciences, University of Otago Christchurch, University of Otago Wellington) and between all the schools and faculties of the Division of Health Sciences and beyond. * Full description of Otago Medical School departments in Appendix 1. Funding is available for proposals in the following areas: Cancer Research, Endocrinology, Arthritis,, General Medical Research (biomedical, clinical or public health), and Health Sciences Research (as described below. To be eligible for the Health Sciences Research category applications can be led from any Health Sciences department/school including the Centre for Bioethics for all other categories, applications must be led from an Otago Medical School (OMS) department applications must have collaborators from at least two schools in the Division of Health Sciences (two participating departments from within OMS is sufficient) collaborations with the rest of the University and external to the University are encouraged named staff should number > two named staff from one participating school may not constitute >60% of all the named staff funding must be spent within the University Desired outcomes It is expected that the successful proposals may: seed a new effort with strong potential to produce high impact research create new connections that strengthen programmes that currently exist in isolation in separate schools create new opportunities (likelihood of fostering additional research opportunities and funding) train young scientists facilitate sharing of research facilities, knowledge and technologies Assessment Criteria Quality: Quality of the research. (1-7). Strategic: Strategic opportunity for the University. (1-7). June

2 Translation: Is the proposal developing routes towards translation of the research into health impacts? (Does not have to be immediately translational but does this collaboration show how a pathway towards translation could be developed?) (1-7). Partnership: Does the proposal demonstrate the capacity to develop or sustain a strong partnership? Is this the best team for this project? (1-7) Impact: Actual impact of the research (this can be research impact, or translational or commercial)? (1-4) Training and sharing: Does the proposal train new people or share technologies and expertise with existing staff? (1-4) Marks out of 36 in total Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the likelihood that the research will continue to evolve and flourish beyond the funding period. Application process See the application format below. Give your application to your Research Advisor from the Research & Enterprise Office who will manage the signing process for you. Funding Available One grant of up to $46,500 relating to Cancer Research One or Two grants of up to $54,000 relating to Medical Research of any kind One grant of $76,000 relating to Endocrinology Research One grant of up to $8,000 relating to Arthritis Research* One grant of up to $13,500 relating to Research* Two grants of up to $40,000 relating to Health Sciences Research of any kind *Applicants may put in applications for more than this amount, by selecting two different categories, e.g. Arthritis and Medical Research. Those that rank high enough in the General Medicine category could be fully funded. Otherwise the highest ranked application in the Arthritis and categories will receive at least the amount advertised as a grant-in-aid. Funding is available for one year only and must be spent by the end of Any remaining funding at the end of 2017 will return to the Trusts. Your budget must be justified and a CCW will be required by the Research & Enterprise Office. Collaborating parties: Name and addresses of the collaborating parties. A key researcher in each of the collaborating departments should be identified. One of these should be identified as the corresponding PI. Other collaborators should be listed with their departmental affiliations. a.i Corresponding PI - Title/First name/surname, Department, School, Usual address. a.ii. 4 Funding is available for one year only. Note that projects must be new initiatives and that the establishment of future research platforms is encouraged. a. Outline the rationale for the collaboration what is the opportunity? What will each party bring to the research? Explain why the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Briefly outline the role of key Principal Investigators from each department. b. Outline the research, including specific objectives, research hypotheses, experimental / study approach, methodological detail and statistical analysis, timeline, significance of this research, relevant previous research, results obtained by others with key references. c. Budget and budget justification (within the 3 page limit). d. References cited (not counted in 3 page limit). e. NZ RS&T (short format) CVs for key staff named in 1a, (not counted in 3 page limit). Section 3 Proposed outcomes of the collaboration (Half to one A4 page) a. Describe how this research may lead towards: future funding, high impact research outputs, health or commercial impact, or new skill development after one - two years. b. Describe what you hope to achieve from the collaboration outlining any proposed additional collaborative activity beyond the end date of the Award and how it will enhance research within the Division and University. How will this funding enhance the overall team s ability to reach their 3-5- year goals? Section 4 Approvals Outline whether EPA, human or animal ethics approvals would be required to undertake the research. Approvals do not need to have been applied for yet, but will need to be in place before the funding can be released. Section 5 Signatures Signatures of the Corresponding PI, their HoD and Dean are required here. Signatures of other HoDs and Deans on a ccw will be required if resources are being used in those departments. R&E rules will apply.
