2 Websites That You Can and Cannot Trust for the Right Information Websites you cannot trust: 1. Wikipedia 2. Reference.com 3. About.com 4. FactCheck.org 5. FactCheckED.org Websites you can trust: 1. Government Websites. 2. Any Website that is a scholarly source. 3. Google Scholar. 4. Any website that has.edu in the url. For Example: Tips & Tricks Have a technology day! For example, you could have Technology Tuesdays where you and your child talk about what applications they like to use and how to use them. This is a great opportunity to build trust and ensure that they are being safe. Technology should be fun and educational! Empower your child by giving them confidence in what they are doing. Listen to what they have to say and emphasize the importance of internet safety. As well, ensure that they have received proper knowledge about applications. Privacy settings are crucial and can be set on most social media websites. Technology is advancing each and every single day. An application may be popular today but it may change tomorrow. To ensure that your child is safe, take the time to educate yourself on their current technological events.

3 Instagram 1. Instagram profiles can be set to private. In order to view a private profile, a user must send a request to follow. When the person receives this request, they can decide whether or not to allow this user to follow them and see their profile. Basically you can lock your profile so that people can add you but you have to know the person. Anyone can follow you on Instagram if your profile is not locked. 2. Facebook actually owns Instagram. 3. When you click on a hashtag which is this symbol in brackets (#) it links you to other pictures with the same hashtag. 4. Any photo that you post can be visible world-wide. 5. Turn off the add to photo map button. For Instagram: The main idea to get across to parents is that they MUST make sure that their kids lock their profile to keep their photos safe from bad users. Instagram is a great way for kids to share their memories through pictures. Overall, Instagram is a pretty safe social networking site for kids if they use it properly. Health & Safety Uses Post appropriate photos of themselves. Use Instagram to share their appropriate moments of fun with their friends quite safely. Make sure your child locks his or her profile so that their photos cannot be shared with everyone, only with the people they accept to be friends with. Don t let your child share any personal information with people if they don t know who is commenting on their photos. Overall, Instagram is a great way for kids to keep track of how they grow up through a series of pictures.

4 Kik 1. With this app, kids can text friends who are also using Kik. Kids love Kik because it is more than typing messages. They can add videos and pictures to their text. They can also send Kik cards. These cards let them include YouTube videos, GIFs, or their own drawings in their conversations. 2. Once someone knows a child s username, they can send them a message. 3. The new version of Kik is rated 17+ in itunes, meaning that it is not appropriate for your children. 4. Kik allows users to ignore new contacts. Kids should enable the Ignore New People feature under Notifications. When someone new contacts them the message is stored in an Ignored conversations list. They can tap the trash can icon in the top-right corner to delete their ignored messages. 5. Kik is always on. Kik does not have a logout button. Kids should make sure they set a strong passcode for their phone or device to protect their account. 6. Deleted messages are still out there. If kids accidentally send a message they regret, they can delete the message on their end. However, the people included in the conversation still have the message. Once it is out there, it can never be completely erased. Healthy & Safe Uses To communicate with friends. KIK is 17+, meaning that your kids should not be using it till Grade 11/12. Other than that KIK is a very dangerous social media sight and we don t recommend that parents let their kids use it in general. Your child could be communicating with people of unknown ages from across the whole world. There are not a lot of safety options compared to the other social media sights.

Adding a Friend Simply click the ghost icon labeled (B) and your account details will be displayed. From here, you can click on Add Friends and you have two choices: add by username or add from address book. For the newest version of Snapchat adding a friend is even easier. You may have noticed that when you click on the ghost icon labeled (B) a yellow box with dots will appear. Basically, you hold up your device to this unique icon (as if you were about to take a picture of it) and just tap the ghost. Now this person has just been added to your friends. 2. Remove/Block a Friend To remove a friend go to the ghost icon (B) click My Friends and simply click the purple box with the checkmark inside. To block a friend go to the ghost icon (B) and click Added Me. From there, select the person you want to block and swipe to the left, there should be an option to block or ignore, simply tap on the block button. 3. Viewing Best Friends and Chat With a Friend Click on the bottom left box icon labeled (D). This will show who you have interacted with. From there, you will click on the top left icon that looks like a speech bubble. This will show you who your best friends are (the most frequent people you have interacted with). To chat with an individual simply tap on the name and start typing your message. Lastly, you can also video chat each other in real time (it is almost like FaceTime) when you are both present in the chat.

It is important to ensure that your child is not sending inappropriate pictures because other users are able to take screen shot of a photo they receive. Friends can add each other when they exchange usernames. Your child has the choice to accept or ignore the request. The simplicity of Snapchat is what children love about it. They communicate seamlessly with their peers and may even add strangers that are not in the same vicinity. Snapchat can also be used to chat with other users. Children are able to use it as an instant messenger. Their best friends are the users that they frequently interact with. Healthy & Safe Uses Sending appropriate pictures to friends. They are able to choose who they interact with. Snapchat is a fun and easy way for children to communicate with their friends. Inappropriate pictures/ nudity It can be a very distracting application and may cause an invasion of privacy issue. Although pictures/videos are only shown for a certain number of seconds, they are not deleted forever. As a result, unwanted photos being shared and kept by others.

7 YouTube 1. Enable YouTube Safety Mode Across All Devices Scroll to the bottom of any YouTube page and click the drop-down menu in the "Safety" section. Then, select the On or Off option to enable or disable this feature. 2. Create Child-friendly YouTube Playlists and Watch Later Pre-approve videos and add them to a YouTube playlist that is child-friendly. You are able to view videos before your child watches them. 3. Block Certain YouTube Channels Visit their Channel page, for example, there should be a URL similar to On their About tab, click the flag icon Click Block User. 4. Monitor You Children s Viewing Habits You are able to view the history of what your child has been watching on YouTube. You can access your watch history by clicking on History in the Guide or the hourglass at the bottom of any YouTube page. 5. Hide YouTube Comments Extension On Adblock Plus for Google Chrome, just head to YouTube, click on the Adblock icon in your navigation bar, and hit "Easy Create Filter". Then, just click on one of the comments and it should highlight all of them. After hitting "Add", you should be free of YouTube comments. 6. Use a Different Video Player Wimp.com is the perfect example that allows your child to safely view videos online. You can also search and download this application on your mobile device. Another application you can download for your phone is FirstVideo. Healthy & Safe Uses YouTube can be used for leisure purposes as well as learning purposes. It opens opportunities for your child to learn about new topics. Children can feel like they are a part of a community and connect to the digital world. Inappropriate comments and users on YouTube. After watching a video, there will be video suggestions based on what your child viewed. Advertisements.
