Pre and Probiotics for Healthy Skin The human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is home to an incredible population of beneficial bacteria responsible for the complex, related network, which maintains regularity and balance in our digestive and immune systems. Microflora is initiated at birth and continues to cultivate as we age, as long as our diets are balanced to provide proper nourishment. Aside from promoting digestive stability, these bacteria protect against the illness and infection caused by harmful bacteria that flourish when beneficial microflora is scarce. Over 60% of immune function is regulated in the gastrointestinal tract.
Prebiotics Prebiotics are non-digestible food products that can fuel growth or activity of nonpathogenic bacteria in the colon. The most common form of prebiotics is oligosaccharides such as inulin and oligofructose. Probiotics Probiotics are healthy bacteria may help to neutralize toxic byproducts, defend the lining of the intestine, increase the bioavailability of nutrients and protect the tract against infectious microbes.
Microflora With modern food processing, these important natural enzymes and bacteria that support healthy gut microflora are no longer present in typical western diets. Not surprisingly, many of us have become accustomed to symptoms of indigestion through our exposure to highly processed foods. It is well known that over 60% of immune function is regulated in the gastrointestinal tract, thus the use of probiotics in functional foods and nutraceuticals have become an important adjunct to balance healthy microflora for optimal gut health. BENEFICIAL GUT MICROFLORA Protect the body by destroying pathogenic harmful bacteria (before absorbed into body) Support immune system Encourage optimal nutrient absorption Reduce symptoms of gastric distress Promote balance of alkalinity and acidity in the intestine Balance skin microflora and support skin immunity
The association between gut health and clear skin can be traced back over 70 years ago in dermatology research. However it is in the last few years that a growing body of clinical data supports this relationship known as the brain-gut-skin axis. Oral supplementation with pre/probiotics for chronic skin conditions is of growing interest due their unique properties in balancing microflora and neutralizing harmful bacteria, not only in the gut but also within the skin. Prebiotics are non-digestible food products that can fuel growth or activity of nonpathogenic bacteria in the colon.
The human skin provides an environment for a range of microorganisms (known as the skin micro flora). Within the skin, there is a complex network of interactions between the microbes and cells of the epidermis (our outer layer of skin). Systematic reviews have concluded that oral therapy with pre and probiotics are effective in the management of acne vulgaris and for both atopic dermatitis and eczema in children and adults. Prebiotics are non-digestible food products that can fuel growth or activity of nonpathogenic bacteria in the colon.
A number of studies also show that the oral administration of friendly bacteria act as major antioxidants that help to protect the cellular membrane component of cells and neutralize free radicals that stimulate the cascade of inflammatory cytokines that deteriorate healthy skin. Normalization of intestinal microflora with the use of probiotics and prebiotics has been shown in clinical data to have a positive effect on several skin conditions supporting the photo-protective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of to the skin. Healthy Gut = Healthy Skin?
SKIN CONDITIONS atopic dermatitis acne rosacea photo-aging (protection) PRE & PROBIOTICS FOR HEALTHY SKIN pre and probiotics found to control pro inflammatory mediators (cytokine activity) probiotics stimulate skin barrier function recovery from environmental insults small trials have shown dramatic improvement in acne patients using probiotics controls pro inflammatory reactions in the skin (cytokines, regulatory T cells) helicobacter pylori infection proposed to play role in rosacea condition associated with higher levels of small intestine bacterial overgrowth, thus normalization of intestinal flora important in the treatment options oral supplementation with certain probiotics shown to stimulate skin immune response when exposed to environmental stressors ZSS offers Clear Skin Method No. 2 which is a clinically proven formula that combines probiotics, Zeaxanthin a strong antioxidant, Marine Lipids - omega 3-EPA oils to assist in addressing challenging skin conditions.
