1 FLORICULTURE & FLORAL DESIGN #3140 INDUSTRY SECTOR: Agriculture and Natural Resources PATHWAY: Ornamental Horticulture DESCRIPTION: Floriculture and Floral Design courses focuses on the production, use, and marketing of flowers and foliage plants utilized in the floral industry. Included are care and handling of cut flowers, principles of art applied to floral design, and the mechanics of floral design. Agribusiness units will be introduced in merchandising, advertising, sales, and operating a retail floral business. Integrated throughout the course are Common Core State Standards and Career Technical Education Standards, which include safety, communication, technology, ethics, career planning and other employability skills. INFORMATION: A. Pre-requisite: Basic reading and math skills. B. Abilities Required: Hand dexterity, (e.g. bending, lifting, etc.) C. Create a resume with clear and purposeful information. Describes the characteristics and benefits of teamwork and leadership. Describe positive work habits, including attitude and work and ethics. Locates job opportunities through the use of want-ads and placement agencies. Prepares for and critiques a simulated employment interview Creates a finished, professional portfolio showing the best work that has been completed during the class. Agriculture Business Pathway RS Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including analyzing how an author uses and refines the meaning of a key term over the course of a text

3 UNIT 2. CUSTOMER SERVICE INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS: HOURS / CC: HOURS Understand consumer behavior and the role of sales associate in facilitating customers purchase decisions. Responds to personal needs of customers. Verifies product is appropriate for customer needs. Motivates customers to return for future purchases. CARE AND HANDLING OF FRESH FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS: Total course hours spent on Section By completing the activities, the student will demonstrate proper care of flowers and foliage. Describe the chain of life or professional care, handling and maintenance of commercial flowers and greenery Identify and describe handling procedures that increase longevity of flowers, such as refrigeration, ethylene, and chemical solutions. Demonstrate basic shapes of arrangements such as triangular, circular, horizontal, dish, baskets, and moss baskets. Identify and list the seven standard sizes of ribbons Identify ribbon types and describe common uses for each type of ribbon Demonstrate techniques for making traditional wire bows of professional quality Students will demonstrate ribbon and bow techniques typically used in floral industry and describe their use in design Utilize work-based/workplace learning experiences to demonstrate and expand upon knowledge and skills gained during classroom instruction and laboratory practices specific to the Agriculture and Natural Resources sector program of study.
