2 THE OPPORTUNITIES NO ONE CAN IGNORE IN PRACTICE Today, information and communications technology are core elements of every business and simply cannot be ignored. The rapidly changing IT landscape can add exciting new dimensions to a business environment but also has the potential to be fraught with danger. In a field where progress can be so rapid, keeping up to date is essential. People trust their chartered accountants. They come to them for advice about their business. To be effective, good business advice must also include good IT advice. IN BUSINESS There are bound to be some areas where your business would benefit from the very latest technology, and others where it would be money wasted. IT and in particular IT spending is now a substantial consideration for any business. It can be a huge investment, so it s important to get it right. Time and again, our surveys of accountancy software have found that the most expensive is not necessarily the best for a particular user. Security and standards are also vital, and a considered and well-informed strategy is key to success.

The IT Faculty is here to help you get the most from the IT you already have, and offer advice about what, where and when you may want to upgrade or expand. JOIN THE IT FACULTY We provide a single source of IT information, news and guidance for chartered accountants in practice and in business. This includes advice about everything from virus and data protection, to choosing software, ISPs and web hosts. Our regular magazines, e-newsletters and online community, IT Counts, include technical advice, security updates, software reviews, and features on issues facing the profession and topics of emerging interest. On a broader scale, we re also involved in technical projects aiming to make accountancy systems more integrated and easier to use, and the continuing development of IT standards within the profession. The purpose of the faculty is to inform about what s going on in the IT world security risks etc. I think it s good, as a source of information it s succinct. 4 WHAT MEMBERSHIP MEANS ONE STOP SHOP Members receive copies of every publication produced by the IT Faculty, including our bi-monthly electronic IT Counts newsletter, with news and features on the IT issues of the day, and Chartech magazine, containing news, articles, case studies and information about forthcoming events. PUBLICATIONS Specially commissioned publications also provide technical information in a simple easily digested format. It is also home to the IT Counts online community where blogs and forums enable members to share up-to-the-minute IT news and views. RESEARCH We re involved in and run technical projects aiming to make accountancy systems more integrated and easier to use. We re engaged in the continuing development of IT standards within the accountancy profession, and surveys like The Use of IT in Accountancy Practices and IT in Business. EVENTS As well as conferences, seminars and webinars, we run national roadshows on topics such as preventing data disaster, the use of spreadsheets and systems development. These are run in major cities like Birmingham, Cardiff, Durham, Exeter, Leeds, London and Manchester. As well as practical information, the roadshows also provide excellent networking opportunities. Members receive discounted rates for all IT Faculty events. THOUGHT LEADERSHIP The IT Faculty is committed to working in the public interest and improving standards in IT and accounting through our Making Information Systems Work thought leadership programme. Members have access to this work through publications, events and articles.
