2 The CENTRAL EUROPEAN INITIATIVE (CEI) is the oldest intergovernmental organization of its kind in this part of Europe, being established in 1989 as the first forum promoting regional cooperation in Central, East and South-East Europe The CEI operates flexibly to promote intergovernmental, inter-parliamentary and business cooperation and is committed to supporting EU integration through collaboration among its Members and with the EU, international and regional organisations. 2

4 The CEI is not only a platform for political dialogue: we developed a specific methodology combining multilateral diplomacy and PROJECT MANAGEMENT, with a series of activities focusing on the region. CEI capacity in implementing and capitalizing on EU projects, involving a growing number of partners from IPA and ENPI countries, is a major asset that allows us contributing to EU enlargement and to fostering the development of Bioeconomy to the benefit of CEI Member Countries 4

5 EU Projects: RENEWABLE ENERGY AND BIOECONOMY Over the past decade, CEI has been devoting growing attention to the promotion of RES. Conversion of biomass into energy is particularly interesting, owing to strong agriculture & forestry and to relevant academic and industrial capacities. CEI Countries will benefit in terms of rural development, energy security, innovation, job creation. Relevant impact on economic growth is expected. The CEI Plan of Action prioritizes Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, with particular regards to Advanced Biofuels and the Bioeconomy. The CEI organizes the Annual Meeting of Ministers for Science and Technology, which is a privileged occasion for policy-makers to discuss common challenges & joint strategies. At stakeholders level, we further strengthened the CEI Network of Science and Technology which includes Centres of Excellence operating in the region, also in the specific field of Bioeconomy. At operational level, we established pro-active dialogue with the EC and leading sector-specific fora such as the JRC, the Steering Platform on Research for WBC, EUSDR PA2 and PA7, EBTP etc. Support CEI Member Countries on their path towards EU integration Promote the alignment of CEI Members to EU standards and the acquis Implement small and medium-sized projects 5

7 The EBTP is recognized by the EC as an official European Technology Platform promoting a range of activities to support advanced biofuels stakeholders. EBTP-SABS started in September 2013 and is: providing support to activities of EBTP which are of interest to the biofuels community and the general public informing on technological, market & regulatory developments supporting EIBI and facilitating the implementation of SRA informing the biofuels debate with scientifically correct, unbiased information and sustaining the development/deployment of most promising value chains The CEI is engaged in promoting EBTP in its Member Countries, facilitating bottom-up flow of information and feedback. The EBTP is on the lookout for stakeholders in our region to foster the deployment of advanced biofuels! 7
