1 EUROPE Program AOSpine Advanced Course Cervical Spine Trauma 6-7 September, 2012 Cracow, Poland
2 Welcome to Cracow Dear AOSpine Course Participant, We are glad and honored to invite you to Cracow a beautiful city full of historic charm and located in the south of Poland at the Vistula River. The occasion is very special: AOSpine Advanced Course on a socially important topic related to the management of cervical trauma. AOSpine Poland has selected distinguished lecturers in the field, who will introduce you to these problems. Since this is a highly complex topic, the course will also include information on anatomy, biomechanics of the spine, as well as introduction to specific surgical techniques with the opportunity for hands on training under the supervision of our experts. It is never too soon or too late to learn. This is the core mission that drives AOSpine s educational activities. AOSpine aims to go beyond classical teaching: the goal is to challenge current paradigms, provoke thinking, and open the minds to new ideas and skills based on the new AOSpine Curriculum philosophy. We hope you will enjoy our meeting, find it useful in enriching your knowledge, and helpful in enhancing your own career as a spine surgeon. See you soon in Cracow. Dariusz Latka Chairperson Opole, Poland Luca Papavero Educational Advisor Hamburg, Germany
3 Description of the course This course will provide the participants with lectures on the cervical anatomy and biomechanical stability of the injured spine to guide the participant in selecting the appropriate operative treatment strategy. The indications for both either anterior or posterior surgical approaches to the cervical spine will be discussed and illustrated with case report sessions, followed by a practical tutorial on specific techniques and the proficient use of instrumentation, as well as hands-on sawbones workshops. Course objective After this course participants should be able to: Describe assessment and treatment options for cervical traumatic disorders List the indications and contraindications for anterior and posterior approach of the cervical spine according to evidence-based decision making for traumatic disorders Integrate anatomical and biomechanical considerations when planning the surgical exposure of the cervical spine Apply the principal anterior and posterior surgical techniques for decompression and stabilization of the either cranio-cervical junction or subaxial cervical spine Aim of the course Participants will be able to expand their knowledge in understanding cervical biomechanics to select and apply appropriate treatment strategies for cervical spine injuries. During the hands-on sawbones workshops, the participants have the opportunity to practice and improve their surgical skills on the advanced operative decompression and stabilizing techniques employing modern instrumentation. Target participants This course is targeted at spinal surgeons (neurosurgeons or orthopedists) with 3 to 10 years of experience in spine surgery.
