Discussion includes information about AIDS, HIV-testing, and the correct way to use a condom. NOTE: Explicit language. To discuss effective ways to prevent HIV infection. 4. To explain how drugs and alcohol can affect good decision-making. 5. 2 BEFORE SHOWING 1. Review the vocabulary. 2. Write on the board students answers to the following questions. Revisit these answers after viewing the video to make necessary corrections. a. How is the AIDS virus spread? b. What are the symptoms of AIDS? c. How can people protect themselves from becoming infected with HIV? AFTER SHOWING Discussion Items and Questions 1. What is AIDS? What do the letters stand for? What causes it? What are the common symptoms? 2. When do people infected with HIV develop symptoms? What are these symptoms? 3. What s the best way to prevent HIV infection during sex? 4. How can sex be safer? 5. How can HIV be spread? Complete the activity. (See INSTRUCTIONAL GRAPHICS.) 6. Why is becoming infected with HIV during a blood transfusion rare? 7. At what age range is AIDS the leading cause of death for Americans? 8. When should a person be tested for HIV? 9. For how long must a person who has been exposed to HIV wait to take an accurate test? Applications and Activities 1. Having sex involves risks for people of all ages, but teenagers face even more consequences. Ask students to make a list of the physical and emotional risks of having sex. Next to each risk, ask students to write the consequences that the risk could lead to. Then, ask students to write one or two ways to protect themselves from each risk. Some risks cannot always be avoided. What are they? 2. Many of our society s ideas about sex come from the media, primarily television and the movies. Most love scenes glamorize sex and fail to mention the realities and dangers. Ask students to think of an example from a television show or movie they have seen recently. What aspects of the experience were emphasized? Did the scene include any reference to the realistic side of sex, talking with partners about past sexual experiences, or making sure the other person was ready for sex? a. Ask students to rewrite the scene to make it more realistic. Have them give the characters dialogue that is more responsible and caring. b. At the end of the exercise, ask students to think about how images of glamorized lovemaking might affect our decisions about sex. 3. Each situation below is designed to be role-played by two students. After each scene, ask the class what they thought of the dialogue. Could the pair have been more understanding? More assertive? a. Person A wants to have sex to prove to his friends that he is a man. Person B wants sex to be special, and does not care what other people think. b. Person A says she will break up with Person B unless he has sex with her. 3 c. Person A had sex before she was ready and now she wishes she hadn t. She is afraid to tell her new boyfriend, Person B, that she isn t a virgin. Person B doesn t understand why she doesn t want to have sex. d. Person A is afraid she will get an STD if she has unprotected sex with Person B. Person B won t talk about his sexual past because he says it is private. He says if she trusted him, she wouldn t ask him to wear a condom. e. Person A and Person B care about each other and feel ready to have sex. Person A wants to use condoms, but Person B says they are uncomfortable. 4. Practice responding to myths and pressures. (See INSTRUCTIONAL GRAPHICS.) 5. People with HIV and AIDS need love and understanding. Yet, many are turned away by their families and friends. Ask students to discuss some of the reasons why this happens. Do students know anyone who has HIV or AIDS? What can they do to help the person? What can students do to help the general community have a more caring attitude about those with HIV and AIDS? 6. AIDS is not the only sexually transmitted disease that is spread during unprotected sex. Write other STDs on the board and ask students to choose one. Have them research the illness to learn more about its symptoms, treatments, cure (if applicable) and methods of prevention. Ask students to summarize their findings in a report. 7. Complete the test provided. (See INSTRUCTIONAL GRAPHICS.) Check the answers in class, being sure to clarify any misunderstood concepts.
