2 UNIT I FAMILY Relatives and Family Friends The main idea in this lesson is to draw children s attention to the variety of family forms we have and to help them understand the ways in which families relate to and stay in touch with close friends and family members. Students will do an activity in which they list several relatives and indicate how often they see them; they will then share this information with the class on a voluntary basis. Following this, the teacher will help them draw conclusions about why we stay in touch with relatives and close family friends and what these people add to the quality of our lives. Homework: The student will write a paragraph about a relative they especially like and tell what qualities the person has that creates this special affection on the part of the child. NOTE: This is not a required activity if parents prefer that students not share this kind of information. Similarities and Differences Among Families This lesson helps students recognize that their family is both like and unlike other families. They will have a scavenger hunt activity that directs them to find a child in their classroom who is an only child; or one who lives with grandparents; or one who has twins in the family; etc. They will also make a list of their own family s favorite activities and share those with the class if they choose to do so. Teachers will help them to prize their uniquely individual family and to recognize that other families are also unique. 2

3 UNIT II ASSERTIVE BEHAVIOR AND SEXUAL SAFETY Good and Bad Touching This lesson will provide a review and reinforcement of the basic concepts of good and bad touching. Students will review ways to increase their potential safety, such as saying no, getting away, and telling an adult they trust. They will also learn about Child Protective Services and the resources they provide. Students will have a homework assignment which allows them to apply this knowledge to situations that student in this age group may experience. Note: Parent can reinforce what teachers have presented by helping children know the difference between good and bad touching. BAD TOUCHING almost always involves: Keeping it secret. Touching private body parts. Feeling like something is wrong (the uh-oh feeling). GOOD TOUCHING, on the other hand, is: Done very openly, so anyone can know. Not done on private body parts. Not uncomfortable or scary. 3

4 UNIT III UNDERSTANDING MEDIA In this unit, students will: Discuss the various media outlets they utilize Discuss advertising presented in each media source. Watch the DVD, Straight Talk About Sex, Gender and the Media. Discuss the DVD and how it presented ways the media may influence their choices. For homework, students may be asked to watch a TV show, to look at a magazine they enjoy, or to surf a favorite website (with parent approval) and to answer questions about the advertising on the following day in class. 4

5 UNIT IV REPRODUCTION Female Reproductive System The teacher will explain the basic parts and functioning of the female reproductive system. This will involve a review of information learned in fourth grade and a discussion of a few more organs and their functions in the female reproductive system. Students may be given a diagram of the system to label and color. Male Reproductive System Again the teacher will review information learned in fourth grade and discuss a few more organs and their functions in the male reproductive system. The students may be given a diagram of the system to label and color. LESSON 3 Review of Reproductive System The purpose of this lesson is to repeat explanations of the male and female reproductive systems and their processes. Diagrams and a crossword puzzle will help students understand and remember information about reproductive parts and their functions. Test on the Reproductive System Students may be asked to label diagrams of the male and female reproductive systems and match terms to their definitions. LESSON 4 Prenatal Development and Twinning The film Human and Animal Beginnings will be used to explain conception, prenatal growth and development, and birth. The film includes scenes of a human birth. The basic fact that a sperm and egg are involved in mammal reproduction is reviewed and emphasis is given to the great level of adult care the human baby needs, both before and after birth. Students will learn how fraternal twins and identical twins are conceived and developed before birth. Homework: The homework assignment may ask students to draw a picture of twins in the uterus, and label the umbilical cords, placenta, and amniotic sac. 5

6 UNIT V HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT Physical Changes of Puberty - Boys and Girls The teacher will review the changes that occur in boys and girls bodies as they become physical adults. Students will use the diagrams of the male and female reproductive system to learn about new body functions. Ejaculation, nocturnal emissions, menstruation, ovulation and masturbation will be discussed. Students will be helped to see that many of the changes of puberty happen to both boys and girls. Emotional Aspects of Puberty Students will engage in a brainstorming activity to come up with examples of how teenagers behave differently than they did when they were younger. The teacher will lead students to consider how their feelings will change as they enter puberty. Students will anonymously write three things about becoming teenagers that they look forward to and three things that they worry about. The teacher will help the class see that the concerns or hopes are shared by many young people. Discussion will focus on many ways that early adolescents cope with personal changes and changes in relationships with adults and peers. LESSON 3 Personal Concerns about Puberty Students will see the first part of the DVD Straight Talk about Sexual Health: Choices and Consequences. The DVD introduces students to choices they will make as they get older and how to handle them. Students will explore the fun parts and the stressful parts of having new feelings and new kinds of relationships. For example, students may have fun with the exciting feelings they may have just being around a person they like a lot, or they may experience stress in the future if they are in a relationship where they enjoy holding hands and hugging, but the other person wants to do more. Students will explore the best way to handle these choices in relationships. LESSON 4 Relationship Changes and Choices Students will see the first part of the DVD Straight Talk about Sexual Health: Choices and Consequences. The DVD introduces students to choices they will make as they get older and how to handle them. Students will explore the fun parts and the stressful parts of having new feelings and 6

7 new kinds of relationships. For example, students may have fun with the exciting feelings they may have just being around a person they like a lot, or they may experience stress in the future if they are in a relationship where they enjoy holding hands and hugging, but the other person wants to do more. Students will explore the best way to handle these choices in relationships. LESSON 5 Sexual Health Students will extend the discussion about choices and consequences they may face as they enter the teenage years. They will learn about potential consequences of engaging in sexual behavior, including pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The affects of STDs on the body are explained. Abstinence is emphasized as the best choice. A second part of the DVD Straight Talk about Sexual Health: Choices and Consequences will be used to provide an overview. LESSON 6 Test on Puberty Students will be asked to write short answers that explain the changes of puberty and the processes of ovulation, menstruation, and ejaculation. An alternate test involves composing a letter explaining the changes of puberty to a fictional pre-teen person. 7
