1 Ice Skating Classroom Activity The Classroom Activity introduces students to the context of a performance task, so they are not disadvantaged in demonstrating the skills the task intends to assess. Contextual elements include: an understanding of the setting or situation in which the task is placed, potentially unfamiliar concepts that are associated with the scenario, and key terms or vocabulary students will need to understand in order to meaningfully engage with and complete the performance task. The Classroom Activity is also intended to generate student interest in further exploration of the key idea(s). The Classroom Activity should be easy to implement with clear instructions. Please read through the entire Classroom Activity before beginning the activity with students to ensure any classroom preparation can be completed in advance. Resources needed: A whiteboard, chalkboard, or some other method to record student responses Projector or some method of displaying images 1 Learning Goals: The student will understand the context of the key ideas related to the topic: o The types of moves that can be done on ice skates o How figure skating competitions are scored The student will understand the following vocabulary: o Ice Skates: boots with metal blades attached to the bottom which are used to glide on top of ice o Ice Rink: an enclosed area of ice that is used for skating o Figure Skating: ice-skating in which the skaters perform various jumps, spins, and dance movements o Jump: in figure skating, a move where the skater comes off the ice and lands back on one skate. Types of jumps include: Axel: features a forward takeoff on one foot and a backward landing on the other foot Toe Loop: features a forward takeoff and landing on the same foot Salchow: features a backward takeoff and landing on the same foot o Rotation: a complete turn made in the air during a jump o Spin: in figure skating, a move where the skater turns in circles on one skate. Types of spins include: Camel Spin: the free leg is held straight backwards Sit Spin: the skater squats Upright Spin: the skater stands upright Layback Spin: the skater bends over backward o Step Sequence: a figure skating element where the skater dances across the ice. Types of step sequences include: Circular: the skater travels in the approximate shape of a circle or oval Straight: the skater travels in the approximate shape of a straight line Serpentine: the skater travels in the approximate shape of an S 1 Instead of displaying Figure 1, the last page of this document can be used as a handout to students.
2 Definitions are provided here for the convenience of facilitators. Students are expected to understand these key terms as they arise in the context of the task, not to be able to recite the definitions.
3 Ice Skating Classroom Activity [Purpose: The facilitator s goal is to introduce students to figure skating and, more specifically, to how figure skating competitions are scored.] Facilitator says: Today we are going to talk about ice skating. Ice skates are boots with metal blades attached to the bottom. When ice skating, you use ice skates to glide around on top of ice. Who has been ice skating? [Allow students to describe and discuss their ice skating experiences. Facilitator should show or handout Figure 1 Picture of an Ice Skater to show an example of an ice skater. Check that all students understand.] Figure 1. Picture of an Ice Skater [For students who are visually impaired, describe the figure orally using the description given.] [Picture Description: The picture shows a woman ice skating. She is holding her arms out and gliding on one skate. ]
4 Facilitator says: Where can you go ice skating? [Allow students to discuss. Make sure that ice rinks are mentioned and that all students understand.] Facilitator says: Can anyone give me examples of activities that you can do on ice skates? [Allow students to discuss and make sure that figure skating is mentioned.] Facilitator says: Figure skating is the sport of performing different tricks and moves on ice skates. What kind of tricks can be done on ice skates? [Allow students to discuss. Make sure that jumps, spins, and step sequences are mentioned.] Facilitator says: Does anyone know any names of different figure skating jumps? [Allow students to discuss. Responses should include Axels, toe loops and Salchows.] Facilitator says: One example of a figure skating jump is a triple Axel. What does the word triple indicate in terms of the jump? [Allow students to discuss. Make sure that the response indicates that triple indicates that there are three rotations in the air during the jump.] Facilitator says: Spins are also very common in ice skating. Does anyone know any names of some ice skating spins? [Allow students to discuss. Responses should include camel spins, sit spins, upright spins, and layback spins.] Facilitator says: Figure skaters also must incorporate dance moves into their routines. These are usually called step sequences. Some examples of step sequences include circular, straight, and serpentine step sequences. [Allow students to ask questions.] Facilitator says: Who has seen a figure skating competition, and where did you see it? [Allow students to discuss figure skating competitions. Possible responses include on television or at a local arena.] Facilitator says: In figure skating competitions, skaters are assigned scores for their performances. Let s make a list of different things that may cause a skater to gain or lose points from his or her score. [Allow students to discuss with the facilitator or in small groups, looking up information if necessary and available. Bring the group back together and record student responses. Expand on the topic as follows if needed.] Facilitator says: In skating competitions or championships, skaters are required to perform certain moves, or move sequences, in their routine. Scores are put together based on which moves the skater performs in his or her routine. Certain moves award the skater more points. For example, a skater who does three rotations in a jump will get more points for the jump than a skater who does two rotations. [Allow students to ask questions.] Facilitator says: Today, we completed an activity about ice skating and how figure skating competitions are scored. These ideas may help you when you complete your performance task. Facilitator says: Are there any questions? [Allow for student questions.]facilitator says: You are now ready to complete the Ice Skating Performance Task.
