1 Title: Energize your Brain Presenter: Stephanie Lawson, Keheley Elementary School, Cobb County Schools Intended Audience: Elementary Physical Education, but all teachers can benefit from this presentation. Wake up your brains to a whole new world of FUN! There are a lot of simple and enjoyable movements that we can teach our students and classroom teachers to use when their brains get sleepy. The brain can only focus for short periods of time before it starts to shut down. In Physical Education classes, students are moving most of the class and keeping their attention is not that hard, but in the classroom setting students and adults should never sit for more than 10 minutes of lecture. Exercise stimulates the brain and helps people become more alert, therefore they become better learners. NASPE Standards 4, 5, and 6 are the focused on during this presentation. There are so many ways to make exercise FUN and exciting! We will be clapping, slapping, and dancing Individual exercises: 1. Standing up wakes up the brain, and hand flapping 2. The spin; Turn around 5 X in a clockwise directions, and then spin around counter clockwise 3. Push-up party 4. Jumping Jacks 5. Bend and stretch exercise 6. Yoga exercises 7. Thumb and Pinky seconds to walk around the room to find a partner. Sit back to back on the center line. Partner exercises: 1. Get to know you activity: Take 10 steps away from you partner, turn around and face them. a. Go to the middle and giver your partner a high five. b. Go to the middle and giver your partner a high five and a low five. c. Go to the middle and giver your partner a high five, low five, and a double high five d. Go to the middle and giver your partner a high five, low five, a double high five, Right elbow e. Go to the middle and giver your partner a high five, low five, a double high five, right elbow, left elbow f. Add on knees, hips, jump turn, and a silly move 2. Partner handshakes: Give 3 minutes for the partners to create a hand shake. Group exercises: 1. Dances: a. Macarena down the middle b. Okey Cokey c. The wop d. Down South Shuffle e. Bounce f. Hulley Gulley

2 Down South Shuffle 4 four wall dance moving in a counter clockwise direction. 2 toe taps to the right 2 X, then grapevine to the right. 2 toe taps to the left 2 X, and then grapevine to the left. Take it back on the right foot, back on the left foot. Repeat. Move at an angle to the right; step right, left, right, close and snap with right fingers up and to the right. Move at an left angle; left, right, left, close and snap with the left fingers up and to the left. As you complete this final step, turn ¼ to the left. Repeat dance at each wall. Hulley Gulley Find a partner and then face each other. Take 3 steps away from each other. Grapevine to the right. Grapevine to the left. Walk forward 4 counts toward your partner; give them a high 5, ½ jump turn, and walk back to finish the 8 count. Repeat until song ends. This can be confusing because their partner appears to be going the opposite direction. One wall line dance Part A. Hokey pokey Okey Cokey Part B. Grapevine to the right and left2 times Part C. Part of the Macarena; touch right shoulder with the opposite hand, touch left shoulder with the right hand, wrap hands to hips, to the backside, and then head nod. The music starts slow and then gets progressively faster;-)

3 The Wop: by JDash This is a two wall dance performed in a personal space. Part A: 1. Make the Money: Straddle the legs, raise hands in the air and make the money sign. Lean right for 4 count, and then lean left for 4 counts. Repeat. 2. The wop: Shuffle step to the right and lean forward pushing arms out to the sides and chest pops out/forward on the first count. On the second count, pop chest in and cross the arms in front of the body. Repeat. (4 counts total)shuffle step to the left as the arms open wide for the first count. On the second count, pop chest in and cross the arms in front of the body. Repeat. (4 counts total) Part B: Freestyle several 8 counts Part A, and B again. Part A and then Part C: 1. Drop it the floor, then lean, and wop 2. Turn around and wop. Turn back around and wop 3. Play dead and drop the body into a slump, then wop 4. Strike a pose, then wop 5. Dang she s fine, then wop 6. Fast and slow wops. Freestyle at the end Bounce Bounce music and 2 wall line dance Start the dance facing backward. Bounce with hands on hips for 2 eight counts. 1-2 Stomp right foot and push right arm at a low diagonal. 3-4 Stomp left foot and push left arm down at a low diagonal.

4 5-8 March and turn to face front of the room. Bounce movement: Bounce 4 counts with hands facing front and low. Bounce 4 counts with hands facing front and at a medium level. Bounce 4 counts with hands facing front and at a high level. Swing arms like a lasso overhead for 4 counts. Repeat. Turtle Squat low with left hand on the hip. The right hand is in a fist and moves in and out making a figure eight. This is done at a low level for 4 counts, med. Level for 4 counts, high level for 4 counts, and then both hands up high overhead for 4 counts. Repeat. Frankenstein move: Stomp right foot and right hand moves to a right high diagonal. Stomp left foot and left hand is bent at shoulder level. Hold that positions and bounce body for 4 counts. Repeat on the other side Grapevine with foot crossing in front of body to the right for 4 counts. Push arms out to the left on 4. Woo! Grapevine with foot crossing in front of body to the left for 4 counts. Push arms out to the right on 4. Woo! Repeat 2X. Step and pull the right knee up at an angle to the right. Step and pull left knee up and at an angle to the left side. Repeat for an eight counts. Step and pull right knee straight up with arm pulling down to the right and then the left for 1 eight counts.

5 Drag right arm across the body for 8 counts. Drag left arm across the body for 8 counts. Take both hands up and slowly down for 8 counts. Half jump turn. Shake hips for 4 counts. Go low to ground and back up for 8 counts. Half jump turn back to front. Grapevine with foot crossing in front of body to the right for 4 counts. Push arms out to the left on 4. WhOO! Grapevine with foot crossing in front of body to the left for 4 counts. Push arms out to the right on 4. WhOO! Repeat 2X. Repeat: Bounce Steps Turtle-shhh! Two finger mask over eyes to the right for 4 counts and then the left for 4 counts. Repeat 2 xs. Stomp right foot, left foot, and strike a thinking pose. Yell, Run to you! Grapevine step with Whoo 3 times. Step and pull the right knee up at an angle to the right. Step and pull left knee up and at an angle to the left side. Repeat moves for a total of two eight counts. Step and pull right knee straight up with arm pulling down to the right and then the left for 2 eight counts. Bounce Half jump turn. Shake hips for 4 counts. Go low to ground and back up for 8 counts. Half jump turn back to front. Grapevine steps again 3 times. Repeat Bounce and strike a pose.
