4 Three strong brands The KSPG Group companies For historical reasons, the Group today comprises three brands: Kolbenschmidt, Pierburg and Motorservice. Kolbenschmidt The brand Kolbenschmidt comprises the business units Bearings, Castings, Large and Small Bore Pistons. The competence subsumes car and commercial vehicle pistons, large-bore pistons, engine blocks, cylinder heads, structural parts. Likewise included in the product portfolio are other cast products, plain bearings, and continuous castings. The business unit Small Bore Pistons of the brand KS Kolbenschmidt is a market leader in gasoline-engine car pistons and in recent years has achieved significant progress in the development of steel pistons for cars and commercial vehicles. The business unit Castings also commands a leading position in the market for premium aluminum engine blocks.the business unit Bearings is the specialist for high-precision sliding elements. The introduction of new technologies in production and surface treatment, benchmark developments as well as clear customer focus have made this unit one of the worldwide leading suppliers of engine and dry plain bearings (Permaglide). 4

5 Pierburg The brand Pierburg is specialized in modules and assemblies for fuel-consumption reduction, solenoid valves, actuators and valve trains as well as oil, water and vacuum pumps for cars, trucks, and off-road vehicles. Competence, which is bundled together in the business units Actuators, Automotive Emission Systems, Commercial Diesel Systems, Pump Technology and Solenoid Valves. As a first-tier supplier to OEMs, Pierburg has ranked for over a century among the most innovative development partners of the automotive industry. On present and future generations of engines, Pierburg is concerned today with reducing consumption and emissions as well as enhancing performance and saving weight. Motorservice The brand Motorservice is responsible for the global aftermarket of the KSPG Group s brands Kolbenschmidt and Pierburg as well as TRW engine components and other products. Through an extensive network of over,200 resellers in more than 0 countries, this aftermarket specialist distributes engine and other replacement parts in original equipment quality for engine repair and independent workshops. With such a broad lineup, the company commands a foremost position in its respective markets. We perceive ourselves, above all, as a service partner for our customers and support workshops with a broad range of training courses, technical services, and information material. Pierburg also markets an extensive lineup of components for emission reduction and control on commercial vehicles as well as a wide range of electric and mechanical coolant, oil, water recirculating and vacuum pumps. These ensure not only the efficient and reliable working of the engine but, through on-demand control, also help minimize fuel consumption. 5

6 Change that drives progress Pierburg and Kolbenschmidt have been operating in the marketplace for over a century. Their histories are closely tied to the development of the motor vehicle. The two separate companies Pierburg and Kolbenschmidt merged to form today s KSPG AG were founded 909 by Bernhard Pierburg in Berlin, and 90 by Karl Schmidt, in Neckarsulm. For many decades of the preceding century, Pierburg had been synonymous with the core element of the mixture formation in the engine, the carburetor. In 928, Pierburg manufactured the first Solex carburetor for Hanomag, thus laying the foundation for what was later to become the best-known Pierburg product for many years. In 986, the Rheinmetall Group took over the management of the company. With the advent of the three-way catalytic converter, the end of carburetor production was foreseeable and such issues as lowering consumption and reducing emissions became focal points of Pierburg business. Today, Pierburg can look back on over forty years of experience in exhaust-gas recirculation, a technology indispensable in achieving present-day and 909 Bernhard Pierburg founds in Berlin the steel trading partnership Gebr. Pierburg OHG. 927 Advent of Alusil, to become the widely popular aluminumsilicon alloy developed by Karl Schmidt. 948 Kolbenschmidt develops the scraper ring piston 96 Commissioning of a new plant for Bearings in St.Leon-Rot. 90 Karl Schmidt sets up in Heilbronn am Neckar a smelting plant for aluminum and aluminum alloys. 928 The first Solex carburetor of Gebr. 7 future emission norms. Proverbial, likewise, is Pierburg s competence in solenoid valves and actuators for various engine applications. The basic business of the Kolbenschmidt company founded by Karl Schmidt, was initially oil-firing devices for smelting metals. A few years later, the first pistons were cast and in 94 a workshop for the machining of pistons was set up. From then on, the company began supplying machined pistons to the automotive industry. In 95, the first plain bearings were produced. Increasingly more powerful engines dictated a need for continuing developments in piston engineering: as from 948, the scraper ring pistons via lightweight aluminum pistons in the sixties to the first profiled pin bores in the seventies. In present-day piston engineering, besides the reduction of friction, important factors are performance and strength, optimum piston cooling as well as reduced noise.
