3 Building Technologies Planning, design and management are essential aspects of all building projects. WelTec offers programmes that allow you to learn about the thinking that drives the construction industry. Our qualifications allow you to access work in all kinds of projects: bridges, roads, tunnels and buildings. Construction is happening in New Zealand at record levels. We re building more by value than ever before. The value of all building and construction is forecast to grow to over $36 billion by 2016, $7.5 billion higher than the last peak in Architectural Technology Architectural technicians interpret sketches and designs produced by an architect, architectural designer or client. They make working drawings, such as floor plans, elevations, sections and details, and associated documentation of buildings. Construction Management Study construction management and you ll learn how to organise, manage and control a construction site. Construction projects can involve hundreds of workers and millions of dollars of materials. Quantity Surveying The key facet of the role is to keep projects to budget and on time. Your work could include giving advice on construction costs, setting budgets for construction projects, and recording and managing these costs. You could measure progress on site and measure construction quantities. Your career Whatever stage you are at with your career, our options can work with you. Our programmes are equally applicable to people looking to enter the industry, tradespeople seeking new opportunities or recent school leavers. There's flexibility with scheduling so if you are already in employment you can explore part-time study. 8 Nicole Architectural Technology Graduate The tutors were also super helpful throughout my studies, and this even continued when I had finished and was applying for jobs Nicole had been working for ten years since finishing school, before she decided she wanted to change her career path and pursue one of her passions. Always having a keen interest in all things architectural; it seemed natural to follow this interest with a formal qualification. Dad was a builder, so growing up I became very familiar with building sites. When I was younger, I was always making grand Lego creations. For Nicole, WelTec was the perfect learning environment for returning to study. Here, she found a supportive group of classmates who similarly were also returning to study after spending time in the workforce. We formed a great bond. The tutors were also super helpful throughout my studies, and this even continued when I had finished and was applying for jobs. Nicole s highlight was her second year, where she completed a major design project. She applied factors such as Energy Efficiency and Sustainability to her structural design, two areas she s very passionate about. Upon graduating she landed a job locally at Design Network Architecture Ltd. She is currently working on a number of new subdivision projects across the Hutt Valley. One day, the dream is to own her own business, with a focus on Residential Architectural Design, an aspect which Nicole particularly enjoys. For now, working at Design Network is equipping her with additional skills as she is involved in a range of projects. 8

11 Make your career move studies Quantity Surveying. Growing up, he lived in the Hawkes Bay and Horowhenua before making the move to the capital. PeterPeter Along with his studies, Peter works at Capital Construction, one of Wellington s leading construction companies. Being in his second year of the Diploma, all classes are in the afternoon and evening which means he can also work part-time. I ve been with Capital Construction for just over 12 months. Now I m running projects by myself, tendering for work and putting budgets together. Peter really enjoys the fact that he gets to go onsite to manage the projects he is involved in. I was working in landscaping, but my old man is a quantity surveyor, so I knew what a great job it was. In the weekends, Peter enjoys playing halfback for his rugby club Marist St Pats. Shaun Shaun completed the National Diploma in Construction Management, whilst also working as a Trainee Construction Manager with Naylor Love. Shaun left school six years ago; working in various jobs since, but has always had a keen interest in the construction industry. After having a good look around for the best course, Shaun decided to come and study at WelTec. On reflection, a highlight of studying at WelTec was that it equipped me with all the skills that you are actually going to be using in the field. Plus it gives you a thorough understanding of the industry. For Shaun, the combination of working and studying means that he can enjoy applying what he has learnt in class, on the job. I started doing basics, then my boss asked me to look at some site drawings and it was identical to what we were learning in lectures. It meant I got to move up faster. Coming back into study after some time off was really manageable, with helpful tutors who made class a pleasant experience for Shaun.
