3 TECHNICAL PROGRAM Presentation Abstracts Presentation Title: The Evolution of Complex Cavity Measurement Techniques from Precision Metrology Applications to Aircraft Electromagnetic Environment Assessments By Dennis Lewis, The Boeing Company, Seattle, Washington Abstract: Electromagnetic reverberation chambers have been used for any years by the EMC community to measure the susceptibility and emissions for various electronic components and systems. This presentation describes how these EMC tools were adapted as a metrology tool to generate precision electromagnetic fields used for field probe calibrations. The presentation also goes on to explain how these techniques were later applied to aircraft measurements to assess the aircraft electromagnetic environment, including wireless propagation and aircraft fuselage attenuation. Utilizing a precision network analyzer along with fiber optic port extenders, measurements of RF propagation from sources as varied as point source antennas to leaky coaxial antennas were obtained. These assessments are essential in the design and implementation of wireless systems on-board aircraft as well as ensuring aircraft system EMC. *********************************************************************************************************** Presentation Title: Tomographic Techniques (Microwave CAT Scans) for Detecting/Imaging Obsured Objects By Johannes Nordgaard, NASA/JSC, E3 Lab, Houston, Texas Abstract: Enhanced remote sensing techniques are being developed to accurately detect and identify obscured objects. In this paper, Microwave Tomography is used to detect and image obscured objects. Tomograms (RF CAT Scans) of the obscured objects are formed using microwave spectral/temporal, spatial/angular, and orientation/polarization diversity. This imaging technique uses a distributed ring of sensors to detect radiated transmissions scattered from hidden objects. Three-dimensional imaging algorithms have been developed to detect, image, and characterize obscured objects. Ground Penetrating (GPEN), Building Penetrating (BPEN), and Foliage Penetrating (FOPEN) radars are used to irradiate the hidden objects. Distributed sensors are used to collect the tomographic data that are used to detect and image the objects. For examples, tomographic techniques are applied to find buried objects, targets under trees, and objects behind walls. Distributed transmitters and receivers, however, significantly increase unwanted mutual coupling and EM emissions that interfere with signal reception. Examples of objects behind walls and tunnel detection are presented. For the special GPEN radar case, by embedding the transmitters underground, reduced mutual coupling and EM emissions, and improved signal-to-noise ratios, can be achieved. Simple surface SAR experiments over deep mine shafts have been performed to validate the 3D processing algorithms using 2D surface SAR sensor data. 3D WIPL-D models have also been used to simulate the embedded and distributed sensors and to verify the significant enhancement in the received signal-to-noise ratio obtained by burying the radiating ring under the ring of surface sensors. *********************************************************************************************************** Presentation Title: Half Power Beamwidth Measurements of Radiated Emission Antennas for EMC By Dr. Vicente Rodríguez, ETS-Lindgren, Cedar Park, Texas Abstract: Recently CISPR has demanded information on the half power beamwidth of emission measurement antennas. In this presentation, measured patterns for some of the most commonly used types of emission antennas are shown. The antenna samples include double-ridged horn, log periodic, biconical and hybrid type antennas. Additionally, a discussion on the effects of the near field and test set up on the half power beamwidth are presented. Presentation Title: Current EMC Metrology Research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology By Perry Wilson, NIST, Boulder, Colorado

4 Abstract: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a long standing research program in the Electromagnetics Division on metrology related to electromagnetic compatibly. This talk will briefly describe some past highlights and then overview current research efforts. One focus area is field generation and measurement in high multipath environments, as simulated by a reverberation chamber. NIST is working on simulating repeatable multi-path environments over a wide range of K-factors for testing wireless devices, such as cell phones and MIMO systems. Reverberation chamber applications to material shielding measurements and to animal exposure study will also be mentioned. Recent NIST work on a quantum SI traceable field probe based on Rabi frequency measurements will be reviewed. Finally, NIST efforts in the areas of emergency responder communications and RFID standards will be highlighted. *********************************************************************************************************** Presentation Title: Mixed Analog/Digital Circuit Board Design and Layout for EMC By Todd Hubing, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina Abstract: Electromagnetic compatibility problems with consumer electronics, automotive systems and information technology equipment are often the result of poor printed circuit board layouts. This is especially true in systems that have both analog and digital circuits on the same board. Examples of mixed-signal boards include control units or power inverters that use digital logic to control the switching of large analog currents, and wireless systems that use digital logic to process radio frequency analog signals. This presentation reviews basic grounding and shielding concepts that are particularly important when designing mixed-signal circuit boards. Common board layout mistakes are discussed and an overall strategy for laying out problem-free mixed-signal boards is provided. *********************************************************************************************************** Presentation Title: Numerical Simulations for EMC Compliance and Standard Development: A New Trend in European Standards By Francesca Maradei, Sapienza University, Rome, Italy Abstract: EMC problems are difficult from the numerical simulation point of view as they involve a very broad band of frequencies and extremes of electrical size. The former requires primarily time-domain models and the latter the capability to address multi-scale problems. Despite EMC problems, simulation is a demanding challenge due to both configuration complexity and tremendous computational resources needed, the everyday increase of computer capability has encouraged the development of reliable prediction models and the use of simulation tools. Over the years, modelling and simulations have become quite common in real-world product design, and lately they are gaining popularity also in EMC compliance and standard developments. This trend has been particularly encouraged by the new European EMC directive that entered into force in 2005, and introduced a new approach based on the simplification of compliance methods, the elimination of conformity assessment bodies, and the allowance of self-compliance. Besides the traditional method based on the application of EMC harmonized standards, the new Directive introduces the possibility of an EMC assessment where no harmonized standards have been applied and the manufacturer applies his own methodology, and a mixed assessment that combines the two previous methods. When harmonized standards are not used, the EMC Directive requires the manufacturer to document all steps taken and decisions made to check the conformity, including EMC design considerations and/or calculation results, statistical evaluations, theoretical studies. In the light of the new approach, many standards are including numerical modelling as a possible instrument to be used to streamline the EMC certification process, and several technical committees are using simulation tools to investigate test setup useful for standard developments. Due to the new European trend, the development of simulation models for the design and certification of complex systems is a new big challenge for the EMC community. This presentation will provide an overview of relevant contributions on modelling and simulations at Sapienza University in Rome, Italy.
