DESCRIPTION This dissertation module requires the production of an 8,000 word dissertation to be submitted in term 8 (term 14 for part-time route students). This dissertation project also has a unique element of assessment in that 20% of the overall grade is assessed on the basis of the design and layout of the final document thus the word count being 8,000 words to reflect this weighted element. The dissertation will present the student s skills in written communication - individual research, analysis and development, the exploitation of a range of knowledge bases, the capacity to present ideas and the ability to visually design effective Communications. It will also utilise their organisational skills in the preparation and scheduling of research and tutorials. The dissertation will develop academic skills on subject areas that in some way relate to design theory, practice, production and/or consumption and is intended to build on experience gained during the preceding terms. The dissertation gives students the opportunity to develop further a particular theoretical and/or analytical approach and, where possible, may compliment other areas of their own studio practice. OVERALL AIM(S) FOR THE MODULE To help students develop appropriate methodological approaches to the hypothesizing, researching, writing and communication of themes related to the production, consumption and theories of design. To help students develop a range of transferrable professional skills that will facilitate the ability to communicate complex ideas, themes and issues that may act as the basis for either a career in design practice and/or the further study of design at a post-graduate level. 14 Bachelor Graphic Communication Bachelor Graphic Communication 15

9 LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of the module students will have gained: Knowledge and Understanding a) an understanding of research methods: including hypothezing, conceptual development, preliminary studies, information retrieval, analysis, developmental writing and the clear presentation of conclusions. b) an understanding of design communication in relation to wider sociocultural issues/themes/debates. c) knowledge of producing an extensive, self-initiated piece of research-led writing around a clearly identifiable subject area. d) knowledge of the design and layout of text-led information to a high level of finish. Subject - specific Skills e) be familiar with the nomenclature specific to design theory, practice, production and/or consumption f ) be familiar with linking text-based information to visual/illustrated evidence. g) be familiar with both primary and secondary research methodologies in relation to design and/or broader visual cultures. Key Skills h) the communication of ideas in both written and designed forms i) personal organisational skills and effective time management j) undertaking substantial research and through this process the construction of an objective written debate/discussion/argument INDICATIVE CONTENT: The dissertation will consist of an 8,000 word written study, complemented by visual supporting material where required, that clearly demonstrates a considered approach to the design and layout of the finished text. The writing should show an understanding of style and structure in the presentation of ideas and facts. The subject matter will be individually negotiated at the beginning of term 6 between student and tutor, and advice on sourcing, investigation and interpretation methods will be disseminated through tutorials, seminars and occasional lectures. The dissertation phase begins in Level 5 term six and is submitted for assessment in Level 6 term eight. For students on the five year part-time dissertation schedule the dissertation phase begins in Level 5, term twelve and is submitted for assessment in Level 6, Term 14. Students are asked to submit two finished versions of their work with an aditional electronic disc version of the text. JUSTIFICATION OF TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES Study Hours 20 x 20 minute supervisions 6.6 Hours 20 x 2 hour preparation 40 Hours Design development and synthesis / studio practice 120 Hours Independent research study 200 Hours Dissertation preparation 33.4 Hours Total 400 Hours CONTEXT Each session will be organized around either a personal one-to-one tutorial between supervisor and student, or may, on occasion, be conducted as a group-based seminar, between supervisor and the supervisory cohort from the degree programme. The learning processes of tutorials, discussions and the submission of successive draft versions of the text, that are presented by the student to the supervisor, help foster a questioning, knowledge-led and independent approach to study. In addition there is also scope within the programme for the student to review and assess their own performance. ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE UNITS 10 WEIGHTING 100 LEARNING OUTCOMES DI- 2 copies of dissertation [8,000 words] a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j ASSESSMENT CRITERIA After all submissions have been received texts are distributed to markers in such a way as to ensure that markers cannot assess a work they have directly supervised. This blind approach is maintained in the second round of marking, here, again, markers are not given texts that they have directly supervised. After all texts have been double marked those scripts where the markers have a grade difference of 10% or over are re-circulated for a third mark, again, through the blind system, and from this the two highest grades are carried forward. The final two agreed grades are then added together and divided by two to find the grade average. Markers, as part of the general assessment procedures, assess and grade the design element of the dissertation. Again, if the two makers final grades are 10% or more apart, then a third marker is asked to assess the design element and the two highest grades are carried forward. When the agreed textual mark (80%) is added to the agreed design mark (20%), the overall final mark (including both elements of assessment) is then converted into a letter grade. All markers for the module are drawn from the combined illustration, graphic communication and design theory staff. 16 Bachelor Graphic Communication Bachelor Graphic Communication 17
