4 Foreign students are able to study Ukrainian or Russian languages at preparatory course of the Department of International Education (webpage: ) Ukrainian and Russian languages are taught by highly qualified lecturers with an extensive experience. Among them are: 5 assistant professors, candidates of philology (5) and pedagogy (1) sciences, 8 senior lecturers, 6 lecturers. The average pedagogical experience of the lecturers is 20 years. Ukrainian and Russian languages for foreign students are provided by the following aspects: introductory phonetics and grammar course; elementary grammar course; basic grammar course; scientific style of speech; training of coherent speech. Knowledge and skills assessment is carried out by a ranking system that helps improve the quality of education as a result of systematic work of students during the semester. III. Required documents for admission to Sumy State University (general rules) To be enrolled at SSU foreign citizens must submit the following documents: a) application form; b) copy of education certificate with the list of subjects and examination marks (credits); c) the document about the absence of HIV-infection, if nothing else is required; d) medical certificate certified by an official public health service of the country of origin and issued not later than two months before entrance to Ukraine; e) copy of birth certificate; f) 6 photos size 60x40mm; g) return ticket; Documents, that are stated in subparagraphs «b», «d», «e» must be translated into English/Ukrainian/Russian language and verified according to the Legislation of the country where they were issued. In case of long term education targeted at acquiring the state diploma at Ukrainian higher educational establishments the mentioned above documents must be legalized according to the established procedure. Candidates for studying in English must additionally pass English language proficiency test. Candidates for studying in Russian must additionally pass Russian language proficiency test. Foreign citizens may be required to obtain the entry visum to Ukraine on the basis of the official invitation from Sumy State University. 3. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES (STUDENT LIFE) I. Academic process Academic year at SSU, consists of two semesters: Autumn semester (1 September 28 December) and Spring semester (1 February 30June) There are short winter holidays (about 2 weeks) and long summer ones (about 2 months).

5 Studying week consists of 5 working days. Working day at SSU consists of 2 shifts: morning and afternoon ones. 120 minutes make 1 lecture hour. elow is a schedule of the lectures: No of the class Start time End time 1 08:15 09: :50 11: :25 12: :25 14: :00 16: :35 17: :00 19: :25 20:45 After every class students have a short brake of 15 minutes, the exception makes one big brake of 40 minutes from 12:45 till 13:25. II. Accommodation Foreign students who study at Sumy State University live in the student hostels. An experienced psychologist and highly professional specialists work with the foreign students helping to adjust to their life in Ukraine and in the hostels in particular. As the representative about 70 nationalities live in the hostels of SSU the university popularizes a friendly treatment of the people of different nations and religion, respect to their traditions and customs. III. Students extra-curricular During the whole academic year SSU students can take part in various events, games, competitions, discussions, round tables, calendar and holiday parties ( Autumn all, Music fests, Cossack s glory, The Student s Day, New Year mosaic, St. Valentine s Day, Tatyana s Day, Comic assortment, Victory Day and others) for students. The excursions to cultural centers of our town theatres, philharmonic societies and museums are rather interesting. In spring and autumn local history excursions of students to the sights of our region and country are being organized. Numerous educational and mass cultural events are held especially for foreign students, in particular, Mister Foreign Student, The Ways of Friendship, National Cuisine, Tourist Hiking, Cheerful Start. Common sport-education and mass cultural events promote friendly relationships between foreign students and Ukrainian ones. Despite all mentioned above there are a lot of different clubs at SSU, where the students can take part according to their interests. Among them are ballroom dance, pop dance, shawl dance circles, dance theatre, vocal studio, theater circle, instrumental group, student rock studio, about 30 sport groups etc. 4.
