1 PHASE 1 INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS SUMMER ROW WORK STARTS AT PARADISE The first phase of the transformation of Paradise has started. This important step will see the start of demolition of existing buildings to clear the site for new buildings and the start of new road layouts to improve and open up connectivity across the city for both pedestrians and road users. Paradise is recognised as one of the most important city centre developments in the UK outside of London and is one of the biggest development schemes Birmingham has seen for a generation. The plans for Paradise will dramatically transform this whole area of the city centre into a vibrant mixed use development of commercial, civic, retail, leisure and hotel space. It will provide major improvements to pedestrian access and greatly enhance the public streets and squares to reflect its position next to one of the finest collections of Victorian civic buildings in the UK with the Town Hall, Museum & Art Gallery and Council House. For further information on the plans for Paradise please visit paradisebirmingham.co.uk Indicative computer generated image for illustration purposes only. ROAD & PEDESTRIAN CHANGES UP TO SUMMER 2015 Paradise is part of the Birmingham Connected vision. Over the next 20 years Birmingham City Council will reinvent the way in which people and goods move across the city. For more information please visit birmingham.gov.uk/connected
2 WHAT IS HAPPENING, AND WHEN? The first phase of works started on site in January 2015 and will last approximately 18 months. 7 WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU CAREFULLY CONSIDER ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF TRANSPORT DURING THE PARADISE WORKS. Investment in transport improvements is an essential part of in Birmingham s future growth and prosperity. The redevelopment of Paradise will not only generate thousands of new jobs but will help to improve access across the city for both road users and pedestrians. Paradise will deliver: New road layouts to ease traffic flow Wide, level pedestrian routes making it easier and safer to move between the Jewellery Quarter, Broad Street, Colmore Business District and the city centre. In addition, Paradise will support proposals to extend the Metro tram network to Centenary Square and to develop the first Birmingham Sprint bus route between the city centre and Quinton. MOVING OUR CITY FORWARD Paradise is part of the Birmingham Connected vision to reinvent the way in which people and goods move across the city. Starting in 2015, Birmingham will see an unprecedented level of investment and activity across its transport network. In addition to Paradise, work programmes scheduled for early 2015 include essential repairs and improvements around Junction 6 of the M6 (Spaghetti Junction/Gravelly Hill) and the start of a new bridge project on the A45 near Birmingham Airport. The scale of the improvement programme will place additional pressure on Birmingham s road network. The first advice is to use public transport whenever possible. Alternatives include car sharing with friends and colleagues or considering staggered working times to avoid peak morning and early evening periods. If you do have to use your car, avoid the Paradise area if possible by choosing alternative routes. These are likely to change throughout the year when further road works at other locations in the city are taking place. Updates will be posted at: birmingham.gov.uk/connected For public transport journey planning, visit networkwestmidlands.com
8 DELIVERING PARADISE Paradise is being delivered by a vastly experienced development team with an exceptional track record and substantial financial backing to match. The development is being brought forward through a Joint Venture Company between Birmingham City Council and British Telecom Pension Scheme managed by Hermes Real Estate. Argent the company who delivered Brindleyplace - is managing the design and delivery of the site works on behalf of the Joint Venture Company. The Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) has provided 61m funding for the infrastructure and site preparation works for Paradise. Carillion has been appointed as the contractor for this initial stage of the Paradise scheme which includes a programme of enabling works and the Phase One infrastructure works. Indicative computer generated images for illustration purposes only. The Paradise development will deliver: 500m investment into the city Creation of hundreds of jobs during the construction period and circa 12,000 jobs upon completion Delivery of 10 brand new high quality buildings A lively mix of uses to create a vibrant and exciting new part of the city Creation of improved connections across Birmingham New pedestrian streets and squares to enhance the city Best in class architecture from award winning architects Improvements to the highways infrastructure The ability to extend the Metro line and introduce Sprint bus services Paradise is being designed through a collaboration of leading architects to deliver the very best working environment in both buildings and public space.
