3 PE A botanical balcony A balcony can become a blooming, luscious green oasis with determination, patience and time (and of course, sun, soil and water). Optimise whatever space you have by planting at different heights on the ground, on stools, shelves, chairs and even hanging from clothes racks. Just be sure to pay attention to the amounts of shade or sunlight the plants need. Use outdoor tables as planting stations. Get creative with what you already have use sturdy bags as planters, old newspaper or toilet paper rolls to start seedlings and clear plastic boxes as greenhouses. 6 PE The window gardener Where there s a window, there s a way to garden. Work with window shelves, plants, pots and hanging rails to create a scaled-down gardening spot. Smaller cups, glasses and even muffin baking cups can hold smaller sprouts that will be transplanted to bigger pots and plots. Shelf inserts can be used and stacked to create even more space for little plants. Herbs are ideal for windowsills, especially in kitchens, so they re nearby when cooking.
