Top Ten Tips for Newcomers A Multimedia Project for ELSA Students
Create a Multimedia Project for Newcomers to Vancouver WHAT? You and your group will produce a short presentation in a media of your choice which you will share with other students in the class. You will teach your classmates and other new immigrants about important things they should know about living in Vancouver that can help them make their life here easier. We will also publish your work on a website when you have all your work ready.
Project Evaluation You and your group will be marked on content, organization, and research (40%) presentation (20%) language (20%) participation (20%) This project will be used for 50% of your in class mark for the term you can see how you will be marked in the chart on the next page
Evaluation Chart
how? A : CHOOSE A TOPIC With two of your classmates you are going to decide on a topic that you want to research and present on. You can choose from this list of topics or if you have a different idea, we can discuss if it is a good topic. education and school banking and finances health and medicine housing - renting or buying leisure time activities shopping and food Shopping and clothes shopping and big purchases ( cars, appliances, houses) transportation family the law and safety support services and help for newcomers- adapting to your new life in Canada social life and friends - Canadian customs enjoying Vancouver - things to do ( free and low cost) work and business.
B: LEARN ABOUT MEDIA - how? You will learn about some fun easy ways to make really good presentations. We will learn some basics in how to use: Windows Movie Maker Voicethread Padlet Powerpoint. When you decide how you want to show your information, you will work with one of these programs.
HOW? C: DECIDE ON YOUR FORMAT AND MAKE A SCRIPT Do you want to make a movie? a poster board online with photos, videos and audio files? a slide show with good images and text? A slideshow with talking and webcam comments? A short play or series of role plays that you can video and make into a movie?...decide with your group what program you want to use and why.
WHEN? DAY 1 Get together with your group. Activity A: Make a group list of topics you want to work on. Say why you think they are important. Discuss different things you could talk about and how you could research it. Choose one topic you all like. Tell me what your topic is. Every group must do a different topic - so have a second choice too. Send me an or hand in this information: Group name students topics choice # 1 choice #2 Activity B: Please fill out the survey on Media and Computer skills. ( page 8) This will help me and your group to know what you can already do and what you need to learn. Hand in the survey at the end of class.
My media skills by I have never usedthis : I know a little about: I know a lot about: I want to learn about: Windows Movie Maker Power Point Padlet or Wallwisher Voicethread Other: Take video Take pictures Use a recorder
WHEN? Day 2 FINALIZE TOPIC Activity C: Now that you have your topic: BRAINSTORM a list of important things to talk about. Think about things you think newcomers should know to help make their life easier when they first come to Vancouver. You can include things such as social customs, cultural differences, what to do, how to do it, where to go, where to get help, how to find more information, etc. Your information can be from: personal experience, things you have learned from other new Canadians, resources for immigrants in centers such as Mosaic, Success, your church, government of Canada offices, the internet, your school, your community center, your friends There are many resources for you to check out on pages 17 to 29 of this document. Choose 10 points that you think are the most important. Put them in order and organize them. They can be in order in different ways: for example - most important, time, big ideas to small ideas, different groups of things, your own organization. Be sure to include key words and new vocabulary in your presentation if it is important to explaining your point. Do not copy information from pamphlets, websites, brochures etc. Read the information and rewrite it in your own words! Work together and also ask me. When your list is ready, you will tell me about it with your group. I will ask you questions about your list and why you think the points you have are important.
DAY 2 continued: media sample PRESENTATION WHEN? We will view examples of media presentations in the class. We are going to see and talk about these presentations: If you want to you can also see them here ( made by Nina Di Giovanni) Windows Moviemaker Voicethread - Padlet Powerpoint - presentations by Susan Bates ( VCC Elsa teacher) made by ESL students

After we see the examples, think about different ways you might want to present the information. You can give me your list handwritten or you can send it to me on Microsoft word.
