Kerbside recycling and rubbish collection service Kōrero māramatanga Your Guide We re making recycling easier
From 31 October 2016 New kerbside service starts We re making recycling easier What s changing? We are moving from a paper bag rubbish collection service to wheelie bins and introducing kerbside recycling. Why are you making these changes? A review of the district s rubbish collection services identified the need to change to a more modern, efficient, cost-effective service. The changes will: Improve services for the community and reduce costs Increase recycling which will reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfills and have a positive environmental impact Reduce health and safety risks by introducing automated collection services Meet the community s demand for kerbside recycling What will these changes mean for me? You ll be able to sort your rubbish and recycling easily. Instead of putting out paper bags you can now recycle kerbside and reduce your rubbish The bins and crate you have received are registered to your property Any extra recyclables that don t go in your kerbside collection bin or crate can be taken to the Rotorua recycling centre Your recycling will be collected fortnightly and your general rubbish will still be collected weekly 2 Keep this booklet handy it s your guide to using the new wheelie bins and crate, when and how to put them out and what you can and cannot put in them.
What will stay the same? Your rubbish will be collected every week. What is changing? A new 240L recycling bin (yellow lid) for plastics, cans, paper and cardboard A new blue crate for glass recycling A new 140L bin (red lid) for general household rubbish Your recycling will be collected fortnightly Every week Every fortnight 3
Boundary Rd Week 1 MONDAY How do I know which is my recycling week? Each bin has a temporary delivery sticker which shows a specific street address. The sticker also shows your collection day and whether you are Week 1 or Week 2 for recycling collections. Each bin is electronically identified and is registered to your address. Please note: Some collection days are changing. See the maps on page 8-10 to check your correct collection day. 231 Boundary Rd 231 Week No. Week 1 MONDAY Tip Your calendar, on page 11, will help you remember your recycling week OCTOBER 2016 S S M T W JANUARY 2017 FEBRUARY 2017 S S M T 4 W 5 T APRIL 2017 JULY 2017 S S M T W NOVEMBER 2016 S S M T W 6 T DECEMBER 2016 MARCH JUNE 2017 MAY 2017 S S M T W 7 T AUGUST 2017 SEPTEMBER 2017 S S M T 2 W M T F S S T 5 W M T 1 W T F S 2 S Did you know? We can live stream the collection and track when your bin has been collected. 4
Where do I place my bin? If possible place bins approximately half-a-metre away from other objects and close to the kerb. Make sure lids are closed and the front of the bin faces the road (wheels are at the back). Place them away from cars and overhead hazards (eg trees). Do not place bins on the road. Tip If you have trouble measuring, use the recycling bin width as a spacer. Please put your rubbish and recycling out by 7.30 am on collection day. 5

Your collection day and week number are shown on the temporary delivery sticker on your recycling bin. Look at the calendar to check which week your recycling collection is on. You will have either a Week 1 or Week 2 sticker on your wheelie bin which lets you know when to put your yellow and blue crate out. 231 Boundary Rd Week No. Week 1 MONDAY 1 2 Week 1 Recycling collection Week 2 Recycling collection Please note: Some collection days for your rubbish and recycling may change. If this happens we will let you know. 12 What happens to my recycling? What happens to my recycling after it goes in the yellow bin? All materials placed in the recycling bin will be compacted in Rotorua and sent to Smart Environmental s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Kopu. This process sorts recycling into separate materials. Once separated the products are baled and then sold in NZ and overseas and turned into new products. What are some of our recyclables turned into? Paper and cardboard are used in new paper and cardboard products e.g. packaging material etc. Aluminium is melted down and turned into new aluminium cans etc. Tin cans are melted and turned into new steel products. Plastics are turned into new plastic products (e.g. plastic containers, pallets, clothing, film etc). Tips to reduce your waste Choose products with little or no packaging. Give unwanted clothes to opportunity shops or use clothing bins Start a compost heap or worm farm, then use the compost/vermicast in your garden. To reduce food waste use your leftovers up, plan your weekly meals and buy only what you need. Did you know? 12 You can join a community garden or start one up with friends and neighbours. Talk to the Council for more information.
How Where to reduce else could your I take waste my unwanted items? The Recycling Centre You can still drop off recyclables at the recycling centre. E-waste Electronic waste such as TVs, computers, can be dropped off. Some charges may apply. Whiteware A bin is provided for items such as washing machines and metals. Metal Private contractors will often pay for your scrap metal or there is a bin at the Recycling Centre. Transfer Stations Some recycling items can also be dropped off for free at the four Transfer Stations in our district. For larger items and general rubbish, gate charges will apply. Did you know? There are costs to dismantling items like TVs and de-gassing fridges and freezers in a safe manner by qualified staff. Rotorua Landfill Residents can drop off commercial and bulk quantities of household rubbish at the Rotorua Landfill. Some recycling can also be dropped off at the landfill. Green Waste can be taken to the Rotorua Landfill for composting. Concrete can be taken to the Rotorua Landfill for recycling. Hazardous Waste household hazardous waste can be disposed of at the landfill. Items such as garden sprays, cleaners, paints, glues, batteries and other household chemicals can be hazardous. You should not include hazardous items in your kerbside collection. This hazardous waste should be disposed of at the landfill and can be declared to landfill staff on arrival. 13
Frequently asked questions If I live up a steep or a long driveway, will the new bin work for me? From other areas in New Zealand most people are able to make the new bins and crate work. If after a few months you are not able to make the new bin work, give us a call and we will work with you to find a solution. Why must the lid be down on the bin when placed at kerbside? The lid must be down to stop contents from spilling or blowing out, to keep animals out and to keep recyclables dry. Why do you ask me to space my bins away from other crates and bins? This gives the truck s mechanical arm the room it needs to pick up the bin. If you have trouble measuring, use the bin width as a spacer. Make sure lids are closed and the front of the bin faces the road (wheels are at the back). Why do we have to keep the glass separate and not just put it in the yellow bin? We need to keep the glass separate in order to most effectively recycle it into new bottles. Please do not put any glass into the yellow recycling bin, as it makes it very difficult to recycle paper and cardboard and it is hard on the machinery used to sort the recycling. 14
What happens if I put something that can t be recycled in my recycle bin? Smart Environmental monitor what comes out of bins as they do the collection. An onscreen camera checks on the type of rubbish and recycling emptied from your bin, and in the case of incorrect material or overflowing bins the contractor will issue you a warning sticker. This will let you know why your bin was not collected. What happens if my bins or crate are damaged or stolen? Please inform the Council. Each bin has a unique ID number that can be scanned to identify it to your property. If we find it has been misplaced to another residence we can let you know. If I sell my house, can I take my bins and blue crate with me? No, the recycling and rubbish bins and the blue crate are allocated to the property and must stay with the property. The bins belong to Smart Environmental and Rotorua Lakes Council. If you re moving to another house in the Rotorua Lakes District, a recycling, rubbish bin and crate should be waiting for you there. Where do I go for further information? Visit the council website or phone the Council on
If you have any questions about your bins, collections, or fortnightly schedules, please call the Council: or visit the Council website Paper used in this booklet has been sourced from a sustainable and responsible forest management programme.
