2 Political Science Degree Curriculum Overview for Prospective Students Once you are admitted and have received your advanced standing report, please contact your academic advisor to receive your official OSU advising guide. Courses from other institutions may also meet these requirements. Not all courses are available online. Check the Ecampus Schedule of Classes for course availability. No course may be used to meet more than one requirement. Liberal Arts Major courses CANNOT be used to fulfill Baccalaureate Core or Liberal Arts Core requirements. Minor courses are the only exception - they can be used for requirements and your minor. B.S. 15 hours in science, computer science and quantitative studies 15 The CLA B.S. degree requirement is a 15-credit block of science, computer science and quantitative studies as follows: 1. Computer Science (-4 credits), and 2. Any course from the College of Science except math or statistics (-4 credits), and. One of the following (8-12 credits): A. Any 8 credits of departmentally approved ST courses, 4 credits of which must be at the 00-level or above (8 credits) B. MTH 111 and 245 (8 credits) C. Any 8 credits of MTH courses at the 200 level or above (not including MTH 211, 212, 90.) D. MTH 241 or 251, and ST 51 (8 credits). Economics majors. Courses used to satisfy the B.S. requirements may not be used to satisfy baccalaureate core requirements.
4 Political Science Major Requirements (52 credits; a minimum of 6 must be upper division) Students selecting a major in Political Science must complete at least 52 credits of Political Science course work, of which at least 6 credits must be upper division ( level). As part of these overall credit totals, Political Science majors must complete: I. 5 Foundation Courses PS 201 Introduction to American Politics and Government PS 204 Introduction to Comparative Politics PS 205 Introduction to International Relations PS 206 Introduction to Political Thought PS 400 Political Analysis II. Upper Division Subfield Courses Students must take upper division classes in at least three out of the following fours subfield American Politics Comparative Politics International Relations Political Philosophy III. A Capstone Course Students must complete a Writing Intensive Course (WIC). Alternatively, students can complete a three-term, three-course Senior Thesis sequence, consisting of PS 410 Research, PS 402 Independent Study and PS 40 Thesis. To elect the Senior Thesis option, students must have a.0 grade point average in all Political Science course work. Please note that completing this sequence does not meet the university WIC requirements, only the Political Science Department s capstone course requirement. IV. Political Science Internship All Political Science majors are required to participate in an internship, and students should meet with the internship director before pursuing an internship. An internship has two components: PS 410 which can involve from 2-12 credits; and PS 402, which is always for two credits. Only four credits of PS 410 may be applied toward the PS major or minor Additional PS 410 credits can apply toward upper division requirements needed for graduation Students can petition the internship director in writing to accept other political field experience in lieu of the internship requirement. The internship director is David Bernell. V. GPA Requirement Political Science majors are required to maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA in all Political Science course work. Students failing to maintain the minimum GPA will not be awarded a degree in this major. NOTES: Blanket Numbered Course: In addition to PS 410 and PS 406, up to six additional credits may be applied to satisfy major requirements from other blanket-numbered courses, including PS 401, 402, 40, 405, 406, 408, 409 and 410. Together, internship and other blanket-numbered courses cannot exceed 12 credits applied to satisfy major requirements. Credits in excess of 12 earned in these courses do count, however, toward university graduation requirements. 4
