1 A Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences and Your Future An associate degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences is a solid stepping stone to further education. It provides strong academic preparation emphasizing communication, and analytical and critical thinking skills. Larry R. Felix, a 1980 graduate of City Tech's liberal arts program, was recently named director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing by Treasury Secretary John W. Snow. Mr. Felix said that the positive atmosphere created on campus by the many students who were the first in their family to go to college and/or were immigrants looking to succeed was inspiring. It was very upbeat at the College; you felt that all things were possible, that you could achieve whatever you set out to do. He further recalls it helped focus me on my eventual career path, namely public service. The LAS degree may lead to careers in traditional areas such as biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics and education. A checklist of courses required for the degree is given in Table 1 and links to career information in science and mathematics can be found in Table 3. If you are interested in one of these areas, please speak to an academic advisor in your intended discipline about your career goals, so that they can assist you with your educational plans. Additional information is available in the Job Placement Office, NG 08, and the New Student Center, Namm 104, (718) , which provides career and transfer services, in addition to academic advisement of new students. Other options for Liberal Arts and Sciences graduates are in the health professions medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, optometry, podiatry, to name a few. If you are interested in one of these professions, please get in touch with the pre-professional advisor, Dr. Suresh Tewani, (718) , in Pearl 613 to learn what is needed to gain acceptance into one of these programs. A Liberal Arts and Sciences degree is a good starting point to transfer to bachelor s programs at City Tech or other colleges. Course selection for transfer to bachelor s programs in Computer Engineering Technology and Applied Math are given in Table 2. If you are interested in transferring to another bachelor s program at City Tech after earning your LAS degree, please speak to Dr. Maria Pagano, Director of Liberal Arts Advisement, Pearl 616, (718) A Course Substitution form may be necessary to insure seamless continuation of financial aid, in some situations. Another option is the CUNY BA, where you create your own curriculum using courses from CUNY s many campuses and put together your own major. If you are interested in a CUNY BA, please speak to Dr. Laina Karthikeyan, the CUNY BA liaison, in P 313, (718) A degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences can also be used to enter the world of business and engineering technologies. An exciting opportunity to combine your strength in math and science with a business career is through an articulation agreement with the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College CUNY. This is one of the premier business schools in the country. City Tech students that have: 1. Completed the following required pre-business courses - ACC 1101/AC 101, ACC 1201/AC 201, and BUS 1122/AC 122, CST 2206/CS 206, ENG 1101/EG 101, ECON 1101/EN 101, ECON 1401/EN 401, MAT 1272/MA 272, MAT 1475/MA 475, SPE 1330/TS 330 or ENG 1121/EG with a GPA of 2.25 or higher in those courses 2. Earned an overall GPA that is sufficient to be admitted to Baruch ( a GPA of at least 2.50) will have satisfied Baruch s pre-bba requirement and be unconditionally allowed to declare a Zicklin School of Business major upon admittance to Baruch. Course selection to meet the admission criteria follow in Table 2. There are many advantages to earning an LAS degree at City Tech. Graduates receive a well-rounded education emphasizing critical thinking and communication skills. In all courses, liberal arts students are exposed to and interact with students majoring in technical disciplines. There is an opportunity to attain an awareness of the important role played by technology in our local-global culture and economy. Liberal arts students may enroll in specialized liberal arts courses created primarily for technical and career programs. Earning an LAS degree at City Tech assures that a minimum of 60 credits will transfer to any CUNY college. Students that transfer before graduating have transfer credits evaluated on a course-by course basis. 0

Students may also satisfy this requirement by going to the Atrium Learning Center and successfully completing a self-learning module. While the self-learning module can be applied toward satisfaction of the Computer Literacy requirement, students will not receive elective credit for this module. 2 Students have the option to use their elective credits as well as other credit areas to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Applied Mathematics, a B. Tech. in Computer Engineering, or a B.B.A at Baruch s Zickilin School of Business. Students interested in any of these options should contact the Director of Liberal Arts and Sciences in Room P616 for more information. Prior to taking any courses affiliated with these four-year degrees, students must obtain permission from either the Director of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Room P616), or the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Room N805). Failure to obtain permission could result in a reduction of financial aid. 3 Acceptable math courses include MAT1475, MAT1575, and MAT2675, and will be determined by the Mathematics Department. 1
