HOW TO READ YOUR DEGREE AUDIT REPORT

1 This document will take you step by step through a sample Degree Audit Report. This sample is meant as a general guide only. The Colleges of the Arts and Sciences Advising and Academic Services office recommends that you meet regularly with your academic counselor to review your degree progress. Student Information: At the top of the Degree Audit Report is your name, student ID number, college of enrollment, academic advisor s name, and the degree and major for which the audit was performed. Courses in Progress: This includes current quarter courses, courses registered for the following quarter, and any courses from past quarters in which you have incomplete or missing grades. In this example, the BUS-MGT 731M from WI00 (Winter Quarter 2000) has a missing grade, indicated by the!.

2 X indicates a requirement is not yet complete - indicates a sub-requirement is not yet complete The audit will go through your General Education Curriculum (GEC) category by category. Courses appear under the categories/requirements for which they are approved. The X indicates a requirement that is not yet complete. In this example, under the Writing and Related Skills category, the student has satisfied the First Writing Course with English 110. The student still needs a Second Writing Course. A hyphen ( - ) to the left of a sub-requirement indicates which specific requirements remain incomplete within a category. Courses are listed by Course Number (for example Math 104) and the quarter in which the course was taken. Once a grade is earned, the number of credit hours and the grade earned are also listed. Note, in the case of English 110, the audit says the course is processed as English This indicates that the course number has changed since the student took it, and the degree audit is recognizing the course under its new number. This also happens when departments change names.

3 IP indicates a requirement is In Progress The green checkmark with the IP over it indicates that this requirement is In Progress. Once this student completes the AFAM&AST 101 and ECON 200 courses with passing grades, the checkmark will change to a solid green, and the IP will no longer show. This student will then have finished her Social Science GEC requirements and will not need to take any additional courses in that category. This student still needs a history sequence and a literature course to fulfill the Arts and Humanities GEC requirement. The hyphen indicating that a literature course is needed appears next to the subcategory heading B. Analysis of Texts and Works of Art, rather than next to Literature. (It s a quirk of the Degree Audit Reporting System that this happens for this particular category).

4 The Diversity Experiences GEC is marked with an X, indicating that it is incomplete, but it has 3 courses listed. Note that there is a hyphen indicating that the International Issues requirement has not yet been completed. The reason for this is that the student has two Western/non-US courses (indicated by a diamond on the GEC lists) but does not yet have a Global/non-Western course (indicated by a star on the GEC lists). Since the requirement states that the student needs at least one Global/non-Western course, this requirement will remain incomplete until the student takes one such course in a future quarter.

5 The Degree Audit Report checks for pre-major requirements, if any, and course work for the major. This audit was run for a pre-communication major, so the major requirements for Communication will not be shown. If this student wants to see how her classes will fit once she is accepted into her major, she will need to run a new audit and select Communication, including her desired specialization. If she has taken any courses in her major, the GPA for the major will be listed as well. The Degree Audit Report checks for courses that meet the Upper Division requirement for a minimum of 60 upperdivision hours. Course work counted toward graduation but not used toward a specific GEC or major requirement : this is where most electives will appear.

6 Not all earned credits will count towards graduation. For example, this student has registered for Math 104 for AU06, after originally taking the class in WI84. While her total earned hours on her grade report will show credits for both, the course can count only one time toward the 191 degree hours required for graduation. (She also has earned some remedial credits, which do not count as degree hours. ) ALWAYS use the Degree Audit Report to check progress toward your degree, especially when you want to know how many credit hours you still need. There are other reasons why credits might be limited in how they count toward the degree besides the ones listed above, including having too many credits outside the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, taking cross-listed courses, and taking more than 80 credit hours from a single department. This student earned some credits outside of Arts and Sciences departments that ARE counting toward her degree. However, there are limits to how many credits can count. A minimum of 176 credits of the 191 required for the degree must be Arts and Sciences or Arts and Sciences-approved courses. An example of an Arts and Sciences-approved course is this student s Rurl Soc 105 (which appears under her Social Science GEC). Rural Sociology is a department in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences. Because Rurl Soc 105 is an approved GEC course, however, it counts as an Arts and Sciences-approved course and is not subject to limitation on the degree. The Degree Audit Report also checks for total degree hours, cumulative GPA, and the OSU residency requirement.

7 Additional Information for Transfer Students: Any courses that transferred with a direct OSU equivalency (e.g. Humanities 111 at Columbus State Community College transferring as History 111 at OSU) will appear on your degree audit where appropriate, as if you had taken the course at Ohio State. Some courses transfer as general, special, or technical credits (e.g. History G000.01, Nat Sci S000.03, Sociol T000.05). For definitions of these types of credits, go to the following website: If you transferred directly into the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences upon admission, an academic counselor in the Arts and Sciences Advising and Academic Services office already reviewed your general and special credits for use on the GEC prior to your Orientation. Any transfer credit that was applicable to GEC requirements will appear on your audit under the appropriate categories. If you initially transferred into the Exploration Program or into a college outside of the Arts and Sciences OR if you brought in additional credits after your initial transfer, your general and special credits may still need review for application to GEC requirements. Call to make an appointment with an academic counselor in the Arts and Sciences Advising and Academic Services office. Certain types of credits may need further evaluation by an academic department. These include any math or foreign language credits that were not used on the GEC, courses that might count toward your major or your major prerequisites, and all deferred credits. You will need course syllabi for these evaluations, and you will need to make an appointment with the academic advisor for that department. Some departments allow students to drop off the requested materials. Contact the academic department in question for more information.
