1 GERM1412 E1152S Beg German II ONLINE Spring 2016 Instructor: Pat Dembach Contact: patd55@suddenlink.net This is a generalized outline of our proposed progression of German language study predicated upon accomplishments from the 1 st semester. Text (Deutsch: Na Klar! 6 th ed.) study and lab work will be assigned weekly. The online venue continues to be very challenging, especially for native sound reproduction, which should be off the highest priority for those interested in conversing in the target language. It is also very difficult to catch up with grammar skills presumably mastered in semester 1 because those grammatical building blocks are the foundation for more complex language situations encountered this semester. You are asked to continue to access German radio and television in order to hear contemporary German and expand listening and mimicing skills. It is essential, required, that you practice at every opportunity. Some of what we study will not be in the text; therefore, it is critical for you to keep current with tasks and assignments. 3 German 1412 Course Outline Wilkommen zum Deutschkurs 1412 Course Content College-level courses may include controversial, sensitive, and/or adult material. Students are expected to have the readiness for college-level rigor and content. Academic Integrity It is the intent of Cisco College to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. The attempt of students to present as their own any work they have not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a serious offense and renders the offender liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension. Student Conduct Students are expected to take responsibility in helping to maintain an environment that is conducive to learning. Changes to the syllabus The schedule and procedures listed on the syllabus are subject to change. It is your responsibility to know what is scheduled. Resources A textbook, Deutsch: Na Klar! 6 th edition, accompanying CDs, lab manuals, and various internet sources that I want you to use to hear the language being used. I believe that associating words with real objects/situations is more successful than merely memorizing vocabulary lists. In this way you will work with real life situations, such as asking directions, ordering food, discussing the weather, etc. Earning Grades Since our goal is to gain proficiency in the various language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, rather than to finish a preset number of exercises, grading will be determined as follows: Vocabulary and other quizzes Listening translations (you tell me what the German you hear represents in English) Participation Conversation (as semester progresses) Sound reproduction (striving to mimic native sounds) Lab work Absences: NO Make-up tests are given. Quizzes cannot be made up. It is your responsibility to know what is due when and if something new has been added to the class syllabus. Non-participation in the class is cause for dismissal. It is my goal, and it should be yours, that you acquire authentic speech and the ability to recognize and associate meaning to non-native sound combinations. Due to our venue, we will not have face-to-face opportunities, but we will speak German.. Learning a language is an interactive and fun process. It is essential to recognize that language is a series of sounds that has meaning for the listener. As such, we will not approach learning German as merely the study of vocabulary and grammar; rather, we will focus on learning sounds that convey meaning, while at the same time building vocabulary and grammar in a more natural manner. If you are truly interested in mastering native sound reproduction, it is essential that you mimic at every opportunity. As in your native language, speakers pronounce things differently depending upon their region of origin. It will be very beneficial to you to listen to as many varying authentic speakers as possible in order to gain a certain amount of comfort with the target language. Sometimes there are different words used to describe or denote similar things. Above all, do not be intimidated when learning to utter unfamiliar sounds. Learning to produce sounds is a very natural process. You cannot be SHY in a language class.
