2 German , Syllabus Intersession 2014!2 German Policies German Language Program Attendance Policy Attendance is expected & mandatory. Please keep your instructor informed if you must miss class. If you know of an upcoming absence, please inform your instructor well beforehand. In the event of absence for any reason, students are responsible for all missed work. Blackboard & Organization of course In this language course, you will encounter a variety of assignments and outlets for these assignments. Organization on the part of the instructor and the student is key for a smooth working relationship. All assignments and pertinent handouts are located or linked in one central place, namely on BLACKBOARD ( Please communicate with me about any questions or problems! Office hours. I will be available immediately after class if you need to meet with me or by appointment. Disability: Any student with a disability who may need accommodations in this class must obtain an accommodation letter from Student Disability Services, 385 Garland, (410) , studentdisabilityservices@jhu.edu Note on Student Professionalism. As a college student, a certain professionalism is expected in how you conduct yourself in a classroom and in communication with your instructors. Wear appropriate clothing to class. No pajamas, no overly revealing clothing as you will be working interactively in partner work. Eat, drink & use the restrooms before and after class, not during class. It is disruptive to do so. Use appropriate etiquette in your correspondences with instructors (Dear Professor, Frau / Herr, or First Name, if offered). Learning a foreign language requires a fair amount of consistent engagement on your part but the payoff is real and measurable. Learning German at Hopkins is fun and rewarding and we are delighted that you have chosen to do so. Viel Spaß und viel Erfolg!

3 German , Syllabus Intersession 2014!3 German Language Program Ethics Insert From the Ethics Board: Cheating is wrong. Cheating hurts our community by undermining academic integrity, creating mistrust, and fostering unfair competition. The university will punish cheaters with failure on an assignment, failure in a course, permanent transcript notation, suspension, and/or expulsion. Offenses may be reported to medical, law or other professional or graduate schools when a cheater applies. Violations can include cheating on exams, plagiarism, reuse of assignments without permission, improper use of the Internet and electronic devices, unauthorized collaboration, alteration of graded assignments, forgery and falsification, lying, facilitating academic dishonesty, and unfair competition. Ignorance of these rules is not an excuse. Ethics in this course: If you have a question about what constitutes dishonesty or plagiarism in a foreign language, please address these concerns openly with your instructor. Below are some examples of unethical or dishonest behavior: a. purposefully lying about previous German background b. unethical completion of the placement exam c. cutting & pasting whole sentences and / or paragraphs from internet or other sources into one s own paper d. allowing a third party to rewrite papers in German e. submitting an English version of a paper to a translator / translator program For more information, see the guide on "Academic Ethics for Undergraduates" and the Ethics Board web site ( Students receive grades on their transcripts as follows: A+, A, A- = Excellent JHU Grading System This corresponds to the following numerical grade in the German Program: = A = A = A- B+, B, B- = Good = B = B = B- C+, C, C- = Satisfactory = C = C = C- D+, D = Passing = D = D F = Failure 62 and below A+ to C- = Satisfactory D+, D and F = Unsatisfactory for freshman grading
