combined_1.fm Page 10 Tuesday, August 25, :05 AM 1 Guide to the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering 1.1 The Industrial Design Engineering faculty The faculty is committed to study, innovate and improve the development of durable products and their services for people, on the basis of the balanced interests of users, industry, society and the environment. The faculty pursues this mission through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates human aspects - i.e. ergonomics, market, organisation and aesthetics - with engineering, industrial production and sustainability. IDE focuses predominantly on durable mass or series produced products for use in daily life; at work, at home, at school or for transport, communication or leisure. Such frequently used products require significant interaction between user and product. The core of the mission is therefore: Creating successful products people love to use Three Master programmes The IDE faculty offers three MSc programmes: Master in Integrated Product Design (IPD) Master in Design for Interaction (DfI) Master in Strategic Product Design (SPD) Research The key elements for the research objective are sustainable and wellbeing. Sustainable well-being refers to an array of positive experiences that are not at the cost of others but address the importance of the ecological, social, cultural and economic context in which we operate. It takes into consideration the resources that are rapidly diminishing, the inequality of wealth and access, and the global competition in which companies must survive. We believe our contribution to sustainable well-being could be channeled through the design and development of competitive products in a global market. 10 Industrial Design Engineering

combined_1.fm Page 11 Tuesday, August 25, :05 AM 1 Guide to the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering Six comprehensive research programmes have been defined, namely: Foundational programs: Strategic design User experiences Technology transformation Applied programmes: Healthcare Personal mobility Living/working The full portfolio can be found at: > research > research portfolio General principles of the Master programmes The MSc programmes are based on a number of general principles on matters relating to content and teaching, including: Education in design is the guiding principle throughout the curriculum; The design projects bring together theory from the different disciplines, methodical aspects of the design process and skills from training exercises; The basic knowledge imparted in the various disciplines is practised and applied in projects and assignments; Education centres on the student and encourages self-activity and independence on the part of the student General structure of the IPD, DfI and SPD Master programmes Each Master s programme comprises 2 years of study of two semesters each. Students can start a Master s programme either in the autumn semester (first week of September) or in the spring semester (first week of February). Every semester starts with MEET IDE, an introduction day for students that have obtained their BSc elsewhere and are therefore new to the faculty and its facilities. This day is followed by the Master Kick Off - all students in the first year of their Master s programme are invited to this event that is organized every semester in order for students to get to know each other and get the semester off to a good start. 11 Study guide 2009/2010

combined_1.fm Page 12 Tuesday, August 25, :05 AM 1 Guide to the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering Each Master s programme encompasses: three general courses and the Integral Design Project for students of all three Master s programmes (21 EC); Master specific courses and projects (51 EC) and the graduationproject and thesis (30 EC); electives (18 EC). The first two semesters each comprise: one or two general course for students of all MSc programmes; four or five theoretical courses; a project in which the theory is elaborated in a design or research assignment; electives The third semester comprises: the Integral Design Project in which students of all MSc courses work together in small groups; Master specific courses and/or electives; preparation for graduation. The fourth semester: Final graduation project and thesis work which involves a (design)project in a company or a researchproject in one of the faculty s research programmes Research orientation in a Master programme Students wanting an extra focus on research in their Master programme can do so by: focussing on research in one of the two Master-specific projects in the first year. In the SPD programme the project in the spring semester is a research project; choosing research-oriented electives; finishing their Master course with a research project in one of the research groups of the faculty or in a research institute outside the faculty. 12 Industrial Design Engineering

combined_1.fm Page 13 Tuesday, August 25, :05 AM 1 Guide to the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering Specialisations The faculty offers two specialisations in the Master s programmes: The Medisign specialisation in the IPD and DfI Master s programmes The Automotive specialisation in IPD, DfI and SPD The following conditions apply to both the specializations. 1. The Medisign student shall organise the following courses in a way specific to this specialisation: one of the master specific projects, the Graduation Project. 2. The Automotive student shall organise the following courses in a way specific to this specialisation: one of the master specific projects or the IDP course (ID4040), the Graduation Project. 3. Both the Medisign and Automotive student shall obtain at least 9 ECTS of specialisation-specific electives. Annotations Specific electives, combined with specific content in the master s Graduation Project, may lead to one or more annotations to the master s exam. An annotation leads to a specific certificate. Annotation in Technology in Sustainable Development See the website: Annotation in Entrepreneurship See the website: Electives The IDE Master s courses include an electives examination component of 18 ec. Electives enable students to individualise their study programmes, for example by deepening their understanding of particular aspects of the subject area or by filling in gaps in their knowledge or skills, or by broadening their knowledge to include related disciplines. 13 Study guide 2009/2010

combined_1.fm Page 14 Tuesday, August 25, :05 AM 1 Guide to the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering The following qualify as electives: free elective courses offered by the IDE faculty; tied electives; these are compulsory courses of the other two Master programmes; however, it is not possible to participate in one of the compulsory projects of another Master programme; courses from other TU Delft faculties: go to courses at other universities in the Netherlands; courses at foreign universities at a level comparable to that of TU Delft. To take an elective at another university, a student must be enrolled at that institution and must supply proof of enrolment to TU Delft. In addition, institutions often require a statement to the effect that the relevant subject is approved for inclusion as an elective in the student s own course. In general, no additional tuition fees are payable. Check in advance if the times of certain electives lectures will not conflict with compulsory lectures. Note: If there are more applications for a certain elective course than places available, students shall be assigned by lot. The list of participants in the Master s courses and electives is available on the IDE Studentportal > Education > Participation lists 2 weeks before the start of the semester. Students must attend all practicals, exercises, project and optional electives, unless the tutor has stipulated otherwise in the course description in this guide. If you are a foreigner and want to learn something of the Dutch language, you will experience that nearly every Dutch citizen speaks English. All courses that you follow are in English and also in daily life, many Dutch people will speak English to you. From experience, we can say that only students from Scandinavia and Germany learn to speak Dutch fluently and actively speak the language. That is why we usually advise all other students who will only stay for 6-12 months not to follow the Dutch course. We suggest you follow an English course instead. It will improve your spoken and written English and has lifelong value! Honours track The faculty offers excellent students who have finished their bachelor programme with an average mark of 7.5 or higher and students who have shown an excellent performance during the first master semester (no fails 14 Industrial Design Engineering

combined_1.fm Page 15 Tuesday, August 25, :05 AM 1 Guide to the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering and marks 7.5 or higher) the opportunity to follow an honours track in addition to the regular Master s programme. Students who meet the criteria for an honours track can, in consultation with the faculty, put together an individual course programme of 30 EC. The extra programme has to be completed during the Master s programme. See appendix 2 of the Teaching and Examination Regulations, the section on Implementation Regulations Credit point system TU Delft uses the European Credit Transfer System (ec). A Master s programme consists of 120 EC; 60 EC per year and 30 EC per semester. 1 EC equals a study load of 28 hours. 1.2 The organisation of the faculty The board of the faculty includes the chairs of the three faculty departments and the educational director. The faculty s dean presides over the board. The educational programmes are managed by the educational director, who is responsible for the quality and organisation of the Bachelor s and Master s programmes of the faculty. He is assisted for each of the programmes by a programme coordinator who takes care of the execution and development of the programme. Coordinators of the Master s programmes If students have questions or encounter problems on a specific course, they can go to their teacher to discuss the matter. Should there be questions or remarks about the structure or quality of the Master programme, then students can contact the coordinator of Master programme in question. Coordinator DfI: Prof.dr. ID StudioLab ID StudioLab is a community of researchers, teachers and students, who share a focus on designing for user experiences. Key ingredients are Designing, Building, and Searching. Research at ID-StudioLab encompasses topics of experience-centred design with special focus areas as the human senses and emotions, intelligence in products, and techniques for providing information and inspiration to designers. The Henri Baudet Institute The Henri Baudet Institute (HBI) is a centre for the scientific study of design history whereby methods and insights from the history of technology, art history, the social studies and culture studies are used explicitly to explain design history issues. The institute is particularly interested in the study of Dutch design history. The HBI explicitly wishes to present itself as a research institute that is for the benefit of the design discipline itself, based on the idea that insights from design history are often important for design theory and last but not least for the designing process itself. Virtual Design Museum The Virtual Design Museum contains images of objects from well-known designers, such as Eileen Gray, Jacob Jensen, Raymond Loewy, Phillipe Starck, and others. Also includes designs for items from companies such as Apple, Braun, Olivetti, Sony, and Wega and selected company brochures. A 3-D view is available for a few objects. Blue Dot BlueDot is a foundation that supports students of the Delft University of Technology (DUT) with bringing their products or designs to the market. BlueDot provides the link between the conceptual work of students and the professional market of consumer products.
