16 AUDIO/VIDEO EDUCATION TED Talks Kathryn Schulz: On Being Wrong (18 minutes) Most of us will do anything to avoid being wrong. But what if we're wrong about that? "Wrongologist" Kathryn Schulz makes a compelling case for not just admitting but embracing our fallibility. Drew Dudley: Everyday Leadership (6 minutes) We have all changed someone s life usually without even realizing it. In this funny talk, Drew Dudley calls on all of us to celebrate leadership as the everyday act of improving each other s lives. Margaret Heffernan: Dare to Disagree (13 minutes) Most people instinctively avoid conflict, but as Margaret Heffernan shows us, good disagreement is central to progress. She illustrates (sometimes counterintuitively) how the best partners aren t echo chambers and how great research teams, relationships and businesses allow people to deeply disagree. 16 / 23

17 INTERVENTION Challenge Students don t always make independent decisions during meetings, rather side with the majority or the more outspoken Benefits of Intervention Students have to make and justify independent decisions Identifies different philosophies Leads to phenomenal dialogue 17 / 23

18 Flash exercise We are often conflicted as Intramural Sports Supervisors as to when it is appropriate for us to intervene and when not to intervene. Other times we talk about addressing an issue, but we fail to talk about how we should address that issue. Everyone will start in the middle of the room. You will be given a situation that takes place during an Intramural Sports Supervisor shift. On GO, you will then decide to either: TAKE ACTION OR TAKE NO ACTION When you make a decision you must be prepared to justify your actions. 18 / 23

20 INTERVENTION Scene Week 3 of Co-Rec Indoor Volleyball between We Play for Keeps and The Book Club. We Play for Keeps is undefeated and a very athletic team with a clear size advantage and The Book Club is winless and an unathletic team playing just for social interaction. The officiating crew is comprised of a first year official (UP) and a two-year veteran (DOWN). With the score of the first game 18 0, The Book Club finally gets the ball over the net for the first time all game, at which point We Play for Keeps executes a flawless Bump-Set-Spike. The spike ends up smashing into a front row players face, and hits the ground for a point. After game one ends 25 0, you witness We Play for Keeps chest bumping and laughing at the score while The Book Club is clearly demoralized and not having any amount of fun whatsoever. To start the second game, We Play for Keeps delivers an Ace serve which is called Out by the Up official. The Down official and you both know the call is clearly wrong and the captain from We Play for Keeps say That s just awful. You saw that was in! directed towards you. After the missed call, We Play for Keeps calls a time-out. You overhear their team strategizing a play to spike the ball in the same player s face for a second time. 20 / 23
