2 Introduction: My project to positively impact the growth and quality of volleyball includes three prongs; 1.) Developing new coaches, 2.) Establishing an informative coaching forum for existing Princeton coaches, and 3.) Providing a youth volleyball clinic. Each subproject will be separately addressed with the required elements. At the completion of each subproject, Attachment A, B and C will be accomplished and submitted to USA Volleyball. 3 Developing New Coaches As the head coach and administrator for the Princeton Junior Olympic Volleyball Club, I have the responsibility each year to provide coaches for the teams. Finding candidates with volleyball experience can be a challenge for me. My proposed project will be to solicit candidates from the player s parents who are willing to take on the training and experience as a coach. In many cases, these parents will not have a volleyball background but one must start somewhere. My task will be to facilitate the new coaches to the training required by USA Volleyball; IMPACT and Refereeing Clinics. In addition, I will be their mentor in the development of their coaching skills and (hopefully) their career. While always keeping the player s interest as a first priority, my goal is to provide the players with the best-prepared coach that I can. Another objective is to build the confidence of these new coaches so that both players and coaches are comfortable with each other. The anticipated output will be a fun and learning experience for both players and coaches. If that is accomplished, a larger coaching base will have been secured. Good coaches are commodities that are needed. Each Junior Olympic season I see numerous Want Ads for volleyball coaches. Hopefully, these new coaches will continue their coaching career. As important, if not more, players should have good coaches so their development and fun factor is enhanced. Although I do not have a detail development plan as such, the following items will be a part of that plan: 1. Assure the mandatory IMPACT and Refereeing clinics are attended by the new coaches. 2. Provide and share written material, videos, and demonstration on the total game of volleyball. 3. Provide one on one training and mini clinics with the new coaches. This will be provided off site as well as during practices and games. 4. Encourage coaches to attend establish coaching clinics such as CAP. Time Line: Actual implementation of this subproject will start this fall of The flexible end will be the completion of the Junior Olympic season, which is around May I say flexible because each season, I plan to implement this project with any new coaches as well as continue the development with any returning coaches.

4 Establishing an Informative Coaching Forum This subproject establishes a coaching forum where information can be shared between all Princeton volleyball coaches. I envision this plan to take the form of regularly scheduled meetings with all coaches prior to the season, during the season, and after the season. Concerns, goals, and ideas can be shared from the head coach down to the lowest level coach and back up the chain. In between these meetings, I expect continued dialogue via and phone. I will provide any assistance to all coaches as requested. A coaching forum will provide a process for all coaches to better themselves. Knowing and solving problems along with sharing of successes will allow each coach to adjust their program for advancement. It will also provide the players a smoother transition to each level of volleyball. Princeton has not had an established forum for volleyball coaches to freely share information. Coaching in a vacuum does an injustice for the players. Players want to progressively develop and in a smooth manner. I believe this project will assist in attaining both of these desires. Established meetings will be set up prior to, during, and after the volleyball season. Phone numbers and addresses will be exchanged to provide ready communication. Agendas will be coordinated with all coaches prior to the meetings. I will take on that responsibility. Time line: This subproject will begin in August 1998 and is planned to continue each subsequent season. Evaluations/assessments will be completed and submitted to USA Volleyball prior to the 1999 year.

5 Youth Volleyball Clinic This last subproject will be developing and executing a youth volleyball clinic. This clinic will be for this fall s 7 th and 8 th grade girls. It will concentrate on serving and spiking, see attachment D. Kids love to serve and spike. This clinic will give the kids the opportunity to have that fun without a cost to the parents (it s free!). Another goal is to teach the youths these harder facets of the game. The last objective is to give the kids a springboard and an eager anticipation for the up coming volleyball season. Kids are always looking for something constructive to do but many times cost can be a prohibitive factor for the parents. This clinic eliminates that factor; it s free. I have also found that serving and spiking are two of the most time consuming skills to teach during the regular season. This clinic will give them a little jump-start and hopefully some confidence to take with them into the regular season. Flyers have been made and posted around the town to generate interest, see attachment D. The local paper has agreed to place an article in the newspaper about the clinic. I have the support of the school and Community Education. I am developing a videotape that will show numerous repetitions of Japan s national team doing the roundhouse type serve; the serve that I will be teaching. Included in this tape will be numerous repetitions of players spiking. The tape, along with my demonstration, will be the visual aids. I am also going to experiment with a number of rubber mats that have footprints pasted on them to simulate the foot pattern of a spike approach. This will only be used as an initial guide. There will be ample hands on with the balls for the youths to execute the skills. Spiking and serving games will be interjected to keep the fun factor up. I may try a small test with each player on their before and after performance in serving and spiking. Time line: This first clinic will start July 27, and end July 29, Depending on results and player turnout, I am planning on running a clinic each year making adjustments to improve the clinic.
