1 Assembly instructions of the type series GM RAILING Massive-U (Side) 1. Basic principles 1.1 The Technical rules for the use of fall-guarding glazing (TRAV), DIBt Bulletin, version of January 2003, form the basis for the assembly of the fall-guarding parapet glazing series. 1.2 The material selection must comply with the state of the art and the existing standards and guidelines. 1.3 For each application, the special local regulations, like e.g. federal building codes, state building regulations, etc., have to be observed

2 2. Static design 2.1 The static design corresponds to the demanded requirements; changes in use may result in changes in the construction. In the plans, the fall area is always shown on the left-hand side and the area to be protected on the right-hand side. If due to the location of installation this should be reversed, additional screw connections have to be replaced by drilling screws as required. In this case, the manufacturer has to be consulted, since the railings were normally optimised for the standard situation. 2.2 The static tests, structural tests and static assessments can be obtained from 2.3 Upon assembly, the GM RAILING release plan has to be followed. The products in the respective dimensions and the planned versions are apparent from the plan in different colours. The structural-physical and further particularities have to be checked independently and constructively implemented without any technical objections. The planning services exclusively refer to our products, however, not to requirements, connections, etc. in respect of the existing structure (possible exception for assembly by GM RAILING ). 2.4 The fasting means are selected such that they are normally attached in a rust-proof version in the exterior, i.e. stainless steel or anodised aluminium. In the interior, the screwing means and lock washers are normally of galvanised steel. Deviations, in particular higher requirements, like e.g. in the swimming pool area or in sea climate, have to be announced to GM RAILING in due time. In this case, the fastening means have to be especially adapted to the application. Increased requirements, e.g. for an indoor swimming pool or in sea climate, may possibly also have to be considered for stainless steel covers and/or for stainless steel handrails, etc. 2.5 It has to be checked, whether the structure fulfils the required static conditions. In particular structure deflexions have to be observed, since these may influence the railing system

3 3. Assembly of the substructure profile 3.1 Structural irregularities of the surfaces have to be checked. In case of irregularities, the substructure profile has to be brought into an exactly horizontal position by underlaying over the entire length, if possible. Clearances have to be respectively underlain or to be backfilled with injection mortar or respective casting compounds, respectively, so that upon tightening the anchor connections no profile deformations occur. A: Substructure GM RAILING Massive-U B: Compensating lining 3.2 With the toothing and the toothed plates, the assembly alignment can be exactly determined. The toothed washers engage at intervals of 4 mm; by turning them, intermediate settings are possible

4 3.3 The fasting distance (anchor distance) is 250 mm. A: Toothed plate B: Countersunk screw M10x40 C: Anchor e=250 mm, e.g. Hilti HSC M10x50 Note: As a provisional arrangement for the period between the assembly of the substructure and the glass assembly, GM RAILING offers an auxiliary railing. This has the following advantages: - Accident prevention and safety in the workplace - Easily attachable to the assembled substructure and easy to disassemble - The glass can be inserted in the last possible moment in order to avoid damages to the glass by construction work, etc. (see Point 9). 4. Delivery of the glass modules 4.1 Delivery takes place ex works or to the construction site of the recipient, respectively, not unloaded. The glass modules have to be checked for completeness and intactness on the transport vehicle. The transport insurance taken out for the delivery only covers damages, which are directly detected in the presence of the driver and recorded on the delivery note, stated in writing as well as documented with photographs. Normally the glass elements are positioned on the glass blocks with the profile pointing upwards, so that the glass edge is protected. The glass elements have to be transported to and unloaded in the proximity of the location of installation

5 5. Assembly of the glass modules 5.1 The glass/metal elements premanufactured at the plant have already been provided with the adjustable screws SS 27x The glass/metal module is mounted in the substructure; thereafter, the seat of the vertical alignment is checked

6 5.2.2 Should the railing not be exactly vertical, the lower screws have to be readjusted. To that, the following applies: Alternately releasing and tightening the adjustable screws, an inclination of the handrail position towards the inside and outside is possible. 7 5.2.3 The thread is a fine pitch thread, i.e. a complete revolution changes the distance in the handrail area (at a height of 1 m) by 2 mm. A 1/6 revolution (so that the next spanner flat lies horizontal), changes the vertical position at handrail height by approx. 0.3 mm. The spanner widths should always lie horizontal, since they correspond with the mounting profile, i.e. subsequent twisting of the screws is structurally impossible. 5.3 Once the parapet element has been brought into the vertical position, the entire construction can be fixed by driving in the adjusting wedges. It is recommended to assemble these alternatingly on both sides. 20 wedges per side and running metre are required. 5.4 Once the wedges have been driven in on the left and on the right, the insertion depth is marked at the wedges. Subsequently, all wedges are to be cut according to this marking

8 6. Alternative assembly options 6.1 Once the wedges of a glass/metal module were driven in, these can be cut off with a power cutter. The glass surfaces, however, have to be protected with a wooden board. 6.2 GM RAILING can offer you an assembling jig. For this assembling jig, a respective mounting part is assembled onto a spirit level, so that presetting of the setscrews is possible using the spirit level. In this case, the jig has to be mounted at every position and the setscrews have to be brought into the respective position (despite the assembling jig, however, it may be necessary to perform assembly adjustments as stated in the original description). The option for adjustment (tolerance range) is approx. +/-2 cm at post height. 7. Handrail assembly The handrails are glued onto the upper edge of the glass in a solid-bed manner. It is recommended to mask the glass surface to the left and right below the handrail with masking tape or adhesive tape, respectively, in order to easily remove silicone residues. 7.1 It is recommended to glue a plastic block with a thickness of approx. 4 mm with silicone, e.g. Dow Corning 895, into the handrail. This serves to avoid the glass/metal contact Subsequently, a generous bead of silicone is applied to the lower edge of the plastic block. The compound is glued to the glass edge. It is important that this sealing has hardened before the next work step. 7.3 In order to create a uniform lateral distance, it is recommended to locally clamp in small blocks on the left and on the right. Jointing now takes place step by step between the small blocks. 7.4 After slight hardening of the silicone joints, the local small blocks can be removed and the joints thus resulting can be sealed

9 8. Assembly of the inner cover strip 8.1 Since the basic profile does not have the required surface, a cover profile according to the detail drawing has to be assembled. We recommend fixing with self-adhesive Velcro strip (SJ 3526N manufacturer 3M) or with a few silicone dots, respectively, so that the profile can also be disassembled. 10 9. Assembly of the auxiliary railing 9.1 As a provisional arrangement for the period between assembly of the substructure and glass assembly, GM RAILING offers an auxiliary railing. This has the following advantages: - Accident prevention and safety in the workplace - Easily attachable to the assembled substructure and easy to disassemble as well - The glass can be assembled in the last possible moment in order to avoid any damages at the glass by construction work, etc. 9.2 The posts of the auxiliary railings have to be mounted into the substructure profile at a maximum distance of 3 metres and wedged. For inclined staircase areas, the inclination is set to 30 degrees already. With these inclined posts, usually all staircase applications can be covered. In the start and end area, it is recommended to always assemble a post or several posts, respectively. If possible, keep the wooden slats in their original length. Upon assembly and disassembly of the auxiliary railing, the assemblers have to be respectively secured with safety ropes, so that there is no risk of falling

11 9.3 The wooden slats have to be placed into the vertical posts and to be fixed by putting them on top of one another. The wooden slats might have to be directly nailed or screwed to one another in order to guarantee sufficient stability. A: Layout posts B: Wooden slats 10. Acceptance 10.1 Acceptance has to take place directly following completion, and the owner or user, respectively, has to be handed over assembly and care instructions. 11. Assembly instruction 11.1 GM RAILING offers assembly instructions at regular intervals. Please contact the GM RAILING team. 12. Care, maintenance and upkeep For the cleaning process, please observe the following notes: We recommend cleaning of the glasses with a mild, neutral glass cleaner thinly applied on a moistened cloth. It has to be observed that aggressive cleaning agents may damage the cover profiles and leave visible marks. Therefore, avoid excessive use of chemicals. Plastic parts and silicone should not be cleaned, if possible, since scouring could occur. Upon cleaning GM RAILING, it has to be observed that the panes are brought into the vertical position using the tolerance compensation integrated in the product. For that observe the notes or figures, respectively, stated in the assembly instructions. For cleaning the mounting profile, simply remove the cover profiles (if assembled) and likewise clean the profile with a slightly moistened cloth. Following cleaning of the mounting profile, the cover profiles can be simply clipped in again. In case of covers of stainless steel, the hook and loop strips have to be separated from the profile and touched up by rubbing with the moist cloth at the glued points, if necessary

12 If your assembly situation allows it, we likewise recommend cleaning of the inside of the profile (e.g. for GM RAILING Top). For that, lift the double bottom. The profile cuts enable access to almost any point of the inside of the substructure profile as well as the mounting screws or anchors, respectively. For a wooden handrail, too should one be assembled we advise against excessive use of water and aggressive substances. Use commercially available wood cleaners observing the associated instructions for use. Note: LSG film de-lamination in the boundary area substantially occurs due to environmental influences and natural ageing and cannot be prevented. 13. Notes 13.1 The assembly personnel must be especially trained experts, sufficient experience in the glass construction and assembly area is a prerequisite Modifications of any kind in the system components are not permitted and require, if necessary, a written, explicit confirmation on our part It is recommended to mount glass modules in the respective substructures using vacuum suction cups Following installation, LSG glazing has to be rechecked especially for previous damage (cracks, edge cracks).
