1 Cancer Clinical Trials Course for Nurses, Trial Practitioners and Research Assistants Introduction This innovative course was originally developed at UCLH to meet the educational needs of staff working with patients on clinical trials without a clinical background. Following the success of the last two courses, this time the program has been adapted to also benefit junior research nurses. The aim of the course is to broaden the skill base of staff and prepare them to take on relevant additional responsibilities as well as understanding the boundaries of their roles. Nurses and graduates with sound clinical trial knowledge and experience working directly with patients are fundamental within future workforce developments in the area of oncology clinical trials. This course is specifically designed to enhance knowledge base and establish competence in practice. It is designed to teach the skills commonly required in trial protocols in a classroom setting and provide candidates the opportunity to practice these in the workplace under supervision. Features Developed in conjunction with clinical trial staff in the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit at University College London Hospital to ensure the content covers all aspects of the role Piloted in the North London Cancer Research Network to demonstrate the course works in practice Links in with the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework

2 Aims To develop the knowledge and skills required to become competent in undertaking delegated tasks within the clinical trials setting To develop an understanding of high standards of clinical care of patients using evidence based health care and meet the national and Trust standards, policies and frameworks Objectives Utilise evidence-based approaches to patient care that promote safe and effective practice Identify and develop candidates existing knowledge and skills to undertake a range of clinical procedures expected in common trial protocols competently Discuss and understand the legal aspects and professional responsibilities relating to the delegated tasks being undertaken Recognise ways in which the spread of infection can be minimised. Reflect upon care given, taking into account patients perspectives, in order to contribute to improved standards Improve knowledge of oncology clinical trials and research governance
