1 Common Core Standards for Mathematics Alignment to Early Numeracy The Common Core State Standards (http://www.corestandards.org/ ) provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. The Early Numeracy domains that are taught include Counting, Sets, Symbol Use, Patterns, Measurement, Calendar, and Numeral Identification. While many early numeracy skills may not directly align to Common Core Standards typically taught in the elementary grades, they do provide students access to these standards. The intention is to provide students repeated practice of early numeracy skills that are so important to provide students with access to all Common Core grade level skills. Early Numeracy, from The Attainment Company, Inc., aligns to the Common Core Standards for Mathematics for the Mathematical Practices and specifically across Grades K through First as noted below. Mathematical Practices Eight mathematical practices have been established across all grades in the Common Core Standards for Math. Early Numeracy domains directly support the Mathematical Practices in the following ways across Units 14: Common Core Standard Early Numeracy Domain Mathematical Practices Mathematical Practice Alignment 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in Counting, Sets, Symbol Use, Patterns, solving them. Measurement and Numeral Identification 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Counting, Sets, Symbol Use, Patterns, Measurement 3. Construct viable arguments and critique Counting, Sets, Symbol Use, Patterns the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. Sets, Patterns 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. Symbol Use, Patterns, Measurement, Calendar 6. Attend to precision. Counting, Sets, Symbol Use, Patterns, Measurement, Calendar 7. Look for and make use of structure. Sets, Symbol Use, Patterns, Calendar 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated Counting, Sets, Symbol Use, Patterns, reasoning. Measurement, Calendar 1
2 Grade by Grade Alignment of Common Core Standards for Grades K and First: Early Numeracy includes seven domains: Counting, Sets, Symbol Use, Patterns, Measurement, Calendar and Numeral Identification. These Early Numeracy domains align directly to the highlighted Common Core Standards for Grades K and First as noted below. The alignment occurs across all four Units in Early Numeracy unless noted otherwise below. Grade K Overview Counting and Cardinality Know number names and the count sequence. Count to tell the number of objects. Compare numbers. Early Numeracy Domains of Counting, Sets, Symbol Use, and Numeral Identification Operations and Algebraic Thinking Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. Early Numeracy Domain of Sets Number and Operations in Base Ten Work with numbers to gain foundations for place value. Early Numeracy Domain of Counting in Unit 4 Measurement and Data Describe and compare measurable attributes. Classify objects and count the number of objects in categories. Early Numeracy Domains of Counting, Sets, Symbol Use and Measurement Geometry Identify and describe shapes. Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes. Early Numeracy Unit 1 Lesson Plan 2
3 Grade 1 Overview Operations and Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Add and subtract within 20. Work with addition and subtraction equations. Early Numeracy Domain of Sets for Addition up to 5 Number and Operations in Base Ten Extend the counting sequence. Understand place value. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Measurement and Data Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. Tell and write time.
