1 NETBALL NEW ZEALAND UMPIRE THEORETICAL EXAMINATION NZ Theory SAMPLE QUESTIONS The questions provided give a guide to the type of questions that may be asked. Sample answers that would gain full marks are provided as a guide for candidates and tutors. Other forms of answers may also be acceptable in some questions. NZ Theory Examination dates Examination 1 4th Monday June Examination 2 2 nd Monday September Prerequisites Pass in NZ Regional Theory and Regional Practical Award Details Total possible 60 marks Time allowed 1 hour 30 minutes EXAMINATION FORMAT Section 1 20 marks Questions are designed to test the candidate s knowledge of game procedures. They are usually more difficult than those in the Regional examination. Section 2 10 marks Umpire Protocols will be included in this section The questions are designed to test the candidate s knowledge of umpiring procedures. Section 3 30 marks Questions may be based on any part of the Rule Book and are more challenging. Candidates must include relevant explanations to gain full marks. NZ Theory Pass Mark 51 marks (85%)

2 SAMPLE QUESTIONS SECTION 1 In this Section, marks may be 1, 2 or 3 for each question. 1. Play stops for an injury to White GK. How should play restart if: (a) White GK was holding the ball when play stopped? Play restarts with White GK in possession of the ball White GK s pass had gone out of court just before play stopped? Throw In Black where the ball went out 2. (a) The Umpires toss a coin to decide which end of the court they will control. (i) When is the toss taken? After the captains have tossed and informed the umpires of the result (ii) Which Umpire controls the northern half of the court? The Umpire that wins the toss (c) Which Umpire blows the whistle to end the game? Either umpire During a game, the Umpire blows the whistle to start and end each quarter. List two other (different) occasions when the Umpire would blow the whistle. 1. To penalise an infringement 2. To signal to the timekeepers to take time OR To signal a goal has been scored 3. State the Umpire s action/s in each of the following scenarios: (a) During a stoppage for an injury to Black GA, Black Coach advises the Black GS to move more in the Goal Circle. Bench Umpire advises Black Coach that no coaching is permitted during any stoppage. When play restarts award a Free Pass to White. 1 mark

3 During the same quarter Black GA requests a second injury stoppage. She waits on the court for the Primary Care Personnel to attend to her injury The Umpire advises the Primary Care Personnel and the GA that treatment must be off court. No SAMPLE QUESTIONS SECTION 2 In this Section state the infringement (if none, answer No infringement ) and the action to be taken or just the action. Remember to state where a penalty is to be taken. Each question may be worth 1, 2 or. 1. (a) Who is responsible for signalling the Centre Pass after each goal is scored? (c) Both Umpires State two responsibilities of the umpire wearing the electronic piece? 5 SAMPLE QUESTIONS SECTION 3 In this Section state the infringement (if none, answer No infringement ), the action to be taken and the reason for this action. Remember to state where a penalty is to be taken. Each question is worth a number of marks. 1. Black GS jumps to rebound an unsuccessful shot at goal. White GD moves into the space and Black GS lands on GD s foot. Answers should state clearly where a penalty is to be taken. Please note: (a) It is NOT necessary to specify that the infringer must stand beside and away from the player taking the penalty. Similarly, it is NOT necessary to specify that the Umpire blows the whistle when penalising an infringement. 6.
