Start a Forest School in college crèche Bridgewater College develop a Btech in Forest School. Offered around the UK building on a rich heritage of outdoor learning in UK 2000 onwards various L.A s take up Forest School working with local colleges to provide training in conjunction with Forestry Commission in Wales, resulting in Open College Network (OCN) qualification in Forest School a network of practitioners hold first national conference at which a UK definition of Forest School was formulated An inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults regular opportunities to opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a local woodland environment support from Forestry Commission in England, Scotland and Wales advancement of provision of sites and backing for forest schools. Number of providers increases External review of Forest School by Murray and O Brien. Various comitees and working groups set up to enhance and refine Forest School practice. 7 th. July 2012 Forest School Association (FSA) launched at Elvaston Castle- a professional body for Forest School and governing body for training. (McCree 2012)
5 Principles A long term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment. Planning, adaptation, observation and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School. Forest School takes place in woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of the learner and the natural world. Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their practice. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for development and learning.
6 Why? IMPACT- It will make a difference in the learning outcomes for our children. Effective
7 Training Requirements OFSTEAD recognised. FSA gatekeeper of qualifications developed in partnership with Open College Network West Midlands Region (OCMWMR), LANTRA, GB Forest School Trainers Network 2013 qualifications placed on the Qualifications and Credit Framework. (on a par with A-Level) Four levels of qualification. 1- An Introduction to Forest School- principles and practice. 30hrs 3 credits. 2- Forest School Assistant- proactive helper 60hrs 6 credits. 3- Forest School Practitioner- Set up, plan and run programmes. 180hrs 18 credits 4- Forest School Trainer I am in the process of gaining the level 3 Forest School Award (Accredited by NCFE) using Wild Wood Activities as a training provider. In addition to this I have completed a outdoor first aid qualification with paediatric content.
