12 Knowledge compass for building specialists Example of a seminar: Moisture management in historical buildings What is it about? Moisture is involved in almost any damage on buildings. Therefore, it is almost always necessary to think about the moisture content of the construction and make adjustments if necessary in the case of restoration and protection of valuable building substance. Moisture management in historical buildings In the first step, it is never a question of completely "blocking" moisture, but rather ensuring that the moisture content in a component is not higher than the possible dehydration. If necessary steps are taken, these concentrates in general on the reduction of the moisture load. However, for some components or building materials, a high water absorption is already the cause of damage or causes damages such as increased salt contents in the substance. In such cases the water ingress may have to be greatly reduced. Particularly at historical buildings, moisture-reducing measures must be planned and executed with the utmost care. The basic prerequisite for this is the exact knowledge of the moisture transport mechanisms as well as the mode of action of the various measures for the reduction of moisture. In the first part of the seminar, the basic contexts of moisture transport in porous building materials as well as in building components are described. The second part is followed by concrete examples of protected buildings. 14
