(From the T.P.W.D. website) Things to Do Visitors enjoy hiking, mountain biking, camping, historical study, and nature viewing. Fate Bell Shelter, in the canyon, contains some of North America's oldest Native American pictographs and is one of the oldest cave dwellings in North America. Note: No hiking is allowed in the canyon area without a guide 1
2 Fate Bell Shelter Pictograph Guided Tour The park offers guided tours, Wednesdays through Sundays, at 10 to 11:30 a.m. and then again 3 to 4:30 p.m. No reservations are required. NOTICE: SUMMER TOUR HOURS - No tours offered at 3 p.m. during June, July and August. Tours cancelled during hot weather, wet/rain and other declared hazardous conditions. Come out to the park and take a guided-hike tour and descend into Seminole Canyon to view prehistoric paintings (pictographs). Where: Meet at the Headquarters Building (museum) to purchase tickets, $5.00 per person (ages five to adult) at least 15 minutes before the tour depart time. TIME OF TOURS: Morning tour promptly leaves at 10 a.m. with return time of 11:30 a.m. and afternoon tour leaves promptly at 3 p.m. with a return time of 4:30 pm. Length/Time: Two miles round trip and 90 minutes Trail Condition: Requires the climbing of numerous stairs and steep grades. Participants should be in good physical condition. Dress for the desert environment: sunblock, floppy hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes. Cameras are welcome. NO pets or strollers or unattended children. Tours are cancelled in wet/extreme hot weather and other declared hazardous conditions. Please drink water before, during and after the hike. An entry fee of $3.00 per person ages 13 to adult (children to age 12 are free in all Texas State Parks). 2
3 White Shaman Pictograph Panel Guided Hike Enjoy a Rock Art Foundation (Seminole Canyon State Park & Historic Site's Friends Group) guided tour on Saturdays throughout the month and no reservations needed. Fall/winter/spring hours from Sept. 1 to May 31. No tours offered in June, July and August. If after the Fate Bell Shelter guided tour, you want to see more pictographs, join a Rock Art Foundation member to descend into a side canyon of the Pecos River to view the White Shaman Panel. Where: Meet the guide at the Galloway Preserve gate, located 1.5 miles west from Seminole Canyon State Park & Historic Site. Length/Time: Two miles round trip and about 90 minutes Trail Condition: Requires climbing numerous stairs and steep grades. Participants must be in good physical condition. Dress for the desert environment: sunblock, floppy hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes. Cameras are welcome. No - pets or strollers or unattended children. 5 High Bridge and Lake Aimstad Located just a couple of miles west of the park entrance. Google image from one year ago (4/7/14). NPS website states that the current water level is 12 feet higher than in this image. The pecos boat ramp is open. 5
6 Hopefuly the water level will be high enough that we might take a very short trip to vsit Prada Cave. It is just around the bend into the Rio Grande (pictographs). It also appears that there is enough water in the Pecos to take a liesurly trip towards the railroad bridge. We will be bringing a small boat that does not hold many people but we can tow anything that floats. 9 Driving directions Texas Hwy. 349 South to Dryden, Texas 157 miles 2 hours 37 min. Turn left (east) and drive 58.4 miles (54 min.) to park road 67 (just past the High Bridge). Turn right into Seminole Canyons State Park and continue ½ mile to the park headquarters 9
