900 South Woodlands Drive #06-01 Woodlands Civic Centre Singapore Tel: Fax: MEDIA ADVISORY MEDIA ADVISORY MEDIA ADVISORY MEDIA ADVISORY 26 February 2015 To News Editor NORTH WEST CDC SEES A FIVE-FOLD INCREASE ON THE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS ENGAGED SINCE North West volunteers and partners receive appreciation accolades at annual North West Volunteers Appreciation Day 2016 In 2015, the North West Community Development Council (CDC) engaged 5,000 volunteers actively in the community to co-organise 300 activities. This is a five-fold increase as compared to five years ago with only 1,000 volunteers. Particularly, we saw the greatest increase in corporate and community partners engaged in the WeCare projects last year. To recognize dedicated volunteers, outstanding students, schools, corporate and community partners who have been most supportive in contributing to the mission of building a Caring and Healthy North West Community, North West CDC would be conferring five categories of awards North West WeCare Award, North West Healthy Living Champions Award, North West Outstanding All Rounder Student Award, North West Outstanding School Partner Award and People s Association Community Spirit Award to 56 recipients at the annual North West Volunteers Appreciation Day 2016 on Sunday, 28 February 2016 at NUS University Cultural Centre. Media arrival is at 12.30pm. 1
2 North West Volunteers Appreciation Day 2016 will be hosted by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, and graced by the following Grassroots Advisers as Guests-of-Honour: (a) (b) (c) (d) Mr Amrin Amin Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs Adviser to Woodlands GROs Mr Liang Eng Hwa Adviser to Zhenghua GROs Dr Lim Wee Kiak Adviser to Canberra GROs Mr Vikram Nair Adviser to Admiralty GRO 3 Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, says, It is heart-warming to see so many volunteers coming forward to contribute to the community. This is an annual event to appreciate these everyday heroes and their dedication. In 2016, we hope to inspire even more individuals, schools, corporate and community partners to join us in building a Caring and Healthy North West Community. A larger pool of volunteers will allow us to cast a wider net to cover more areas of community work, ranging from projects aimed at caring for the vulnerable residents, inspiring youths and promoting healthy living and environmental causes. 4 Volunteers, corporate and community partners are crucial in realising the North West CDC s vision of building a Caring and Healthy North West Community. The 5 healthy living pillars which comprises North West Brisk Walking Club, North West Health Qigong Club, North West Dance-Fit Club, North West Aerobics Club and North West SwimSafer Club for Seniors are supported by volunteer coordinators and champions organising regular activities for 257 clubs with close to 80,000 members. 5 Mr Chang Hiang Mong, who clocks at least 1,000 service hours a year and actively encourages volunteerism among his North West Brisk Walking Club and North West Health Qigong Club members; Ms Norhanim Bte Sattah, who has served passionately for more than 10 years as a coordinator for North West Brisk Walking Club; and Mdm Lim Siew Hwa, who commits five hours weekly to activities in the North West Aerobics Club, North West Dance-Fit Club and North West Brisk Walking Club, are three dedicated volunteers and North West Healthy Living 2
Champions Awardees. Please refer to Annex C for human interest stories, and annex D for summaries of awards. 6 Having served in the grassroots for 23 years, Mdm Koh Siang Noi Rose, 54 years old, is one of the recipients of the North West WeCare Award this year. She says, It is my passion to serve people, especially the seniors. Since I was a child, my parents had taught me that it is better to give than to receive. There is this satisfaction from within when you catch a glimpse of a relaxing smile on the faces of residents you have helped. Organisations have also joined in to inculcate a spirit of giving back among their employees by partaking in volunteerism as a group. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Command under the Republic of Singapore Air Force, which had been encouraging batches of National Service Full-Timers (NSFs) to volunteer at the Melrose Home for 15 years, and City Sunshine Club under the City Developments Limited, which adopted and organised activities for two rental blocks in Marsiling Road for many years, are two examples of organisations dedicated to giving back to the community. 7 The North West Outstanding All Rounder Student Award-CDC level will be presented during the North West Volunteers Appreciation Day The North West Outstanding All Rounder Student Award-CDC level serves to recognise 15 students who are all-rounders in the five main areas of Academic, Leadership, Co-curriculum, Community Service and other attributes such as student s creativity, as well as the student s involvement in caring for the environment. 8 Supportive school partners are also essential in nurturing a cohesive and caring community. The collaboration with schools provides a platform for students to volunteer and develop holistically outside the classroom. To appreciate and recognise schools that have provided tremendous support to the North West Community, 26 schools will be conferred the North West Outstanding School Partner Award during the event. 9 To encourage organisations involvement in CDC and grassroots activities, the People s Association Community Spirit Award is presented to corporate and community partners who embody the spirit of volunteerism and Corporate Social Responsibility. Corporate partners, Master Contract Services Pte Ltd and Serial System Ltd, as well as school partners, St Margaret s Secondary School, Chung Cheng High School (Yishun) and Yishun Town Secondary School, will receive the merit award at the event. 3

Annex C HUMAN INTEREST STORY ON NORTH WEST WECARE AWARD Mdm Koh Siang Noi Rose 54 Years Old Nee Soon East Division Growing up with a Kampong spirit, where neighbours cared for and shared with one another, had inspired Mdm Koh Siang Noi Rose to serve the North West Community, and she has handled over 5,500 cases over 23 years. During her childhood days, playing and eating together with seniors who gave her guidance has contributed to her passion for volunteering, especially in areas of helping the needy and seniors. Dedicated in meeting needs of residents seeking social assistance, she conducts regular house visits and leads her team of welfare volunteers to provide empathy, goodwill and effective help to the needy in the community. For an example, she visits the less mobile elderly regularly to find out their daily needs and check on their well-being. However, not everyone is receptive of help. For Mdm Koh, social assistance is not just a one-time help, it is a continuous process. Mdm Koh shared about such a family of three, with one sole breadwinner and two stay-home members suffering from medical conditions, which was hesitant about receiving social assistance due to their distrust of strangers and reluctance to step out of their comfort zone to elevate their circumstances. It was only after two years of reaching out and unwavering sincerity that Mdm Koh finally managed to gain their trust. She has since coordinated home cleaning and social bonding activities for the family, as well as provided them with emotional support. Mdm Koh is committed to the relationship she had built up with many other similar families. Despite having a slipped disc injury, she often helps in home cleaning. Mdm Rose believes that her dedication will garner greater trust from these families and make them more receptive of the assistance that they need. Mdm Koh also shared that the relieved smiles on faces of residents she had helped spurs her to continue her volunteering work for many more years to come. 8
HUMAN INTEREST STORY ON NORTH WEST WECARE AWARD City Sunshine Club City Developments Limited (CDL) The staff of City Sunshine Club, under City Developments Limited, contributed at least 1,000 service hours to benefit 4,000 North West families over the last five years. They supported various CDC programmes, and an example would be their adoption of two rental blocks in Marsiling since 2012 to befriend and spread festive cheers to the less privileged through outings and festival celebrations under the North West Care & Repair and North West Service Weeks programmes. Recently, they also engage the lowincome families in rental blocks of Limbang Division. Regular activities organised for the residents include Chinese New Year celebrations, trips to the S.E.A. Aquarium, and mooncakes-making during Mid-Autumn festival. Under the North West Care and Repair programme in 2012, City Sunshine Club, together with other community partners, planned and organised the first Christmas celebration for the needy residents. Playing Santa, City Sunshine Club granted wishes of children from low-income families and presented the elderly with $50 worth of vouchers. Participants were also treated to a HiPPO Tour ride through Orchard Road to enjoy the Christmas light-up and busk in the festivities. Similarly in North West Care and Repair in 2014 and 2015, City Sunshine Club gathered donations from their staff to purchase Christmas presents on the wish list of needy students of Marsiling and Limbang Divisions. Staff volunteers distributed these presents and organised game booths to bring Christmas cheer to the needy residents. City Sunshine Club showcases their spirit of giving not just on special occasions in 2015 and 2016, they were engaged in North West Service Weeks. In both years, City Sunshine Club donated household items to 10 households each year, to make life more comfortable for the residents. 9
HUMAN INTEREST STORY ON NORTH WEST HEALTHY LIVING CHAMPIONS AWARD Ms Norhanim Bte Sattah 48 Years Old Zhenghua-Jelapang Division North West Brisk Walking Club Ms Norhanim Bte Sattah holds family health and bonding close to her heart. Due to economic and societal progress, family members lead a more hectic lifestyle individually. As such, stress build up easily and quality time spent as a family depletes. Ms Norhanim sees the Brisk Walking Club as an opportunity to solve both issues simultaneously. Her dedication to volunteering stems from this personal interest in bonding the young and old through activities that boost health concurrently. This drive has motivated her to be actively involved as a coordinator in North West Brisk Walking Club for more than 10 years. The Brisk Walking Club activities are a platform for residents of different ages and races to come together and for new friendships to blossom while providing a channel for residents to keep in touch. Ms Norhanim demonstrates her commitment and strong personal belief in health and family bonding by roping in her family members, and she regularly brisk walks together with her daughter. Ms Norhanim s hopes for the future of the Brisk Walking Club are a much larger membership and greater bonding between the residents. 10
HUMAN INTEREST STORY ON NORTH WEST HEALTHY LIVING CHAMPIONS AWARD Mr Chang Hiang Mong 57 Years Old Admiralty Division North West Brisk Walking Club North West Health Qigong Club Clocking at least 1,000 volunteering hours yearly, Mr Chang Hiang Mong is a familiar face to many in the Admiralty Division. A typical day in Mr Chang s life involves an average of four hours dedicated to volunteering, and an entire day of socialising with other residents in his community. He finds joy in bonding with neighbours and residents, and feels that it makes life more fulfilling and interesting. Mr Chang has been a reliable and regular Healthy Living Coordinator for both the North West Brisk Walking Club and the North West Health Qigong Club. He goes all out to encourage new members through wordof-mouth on the ground, and actively shares about healthy living with residents and especially his neighbours. His bubbly and welcoming personality won over many members for the two clubs. It is no wonder that the turnout at each of his sessions range between 100 and 200 participants. Mr Chang shared that the secret to his successful encouragement of new members to come on board lies in understanding the needs of the ground, relationship building and word-of-mouth sharing. Mr Chang would first establish goodwill and friendships with residents, then encourage them to join the Healthy Living Clubs. Through club activities and introductions, Mr Chang connects them to one another. Mr Chang seeks to inspire his members to become regular volunteers like himself. His effort in networking and connecting residents paid off Today, Mr Chang is able to rally more than 200 passionate volunteers for large-scale Healthy Living events. 11

HUMAN INTEREST STORY ON NORTH WEST OUTSTANDING ALL ROUNDER STUDENT AWARD Cook Elray Danish Bin Cook Reuben James 17 Years Old Sembawang Secondary School Success is not final, failure is not fatal. This is Elray s advice to his peers. An unfavourable PSLE result slip landed Elray in the Normal (Technical) stream in Sembawang Secondary School. However, Elray believes that students in the Normal (Technical) stream are just as capable and was determined to rise above his setback. He says, I took my failure as a stepping stone and strove to give my best in Secondary School. My resilience, hard work and determination to succeed helped me soar throughout my Secondary School journey. Although Elray emerged as the best in his cohort for the 2015 examination, success to Elray is more than just academic progress. He wanted to serve and inspire his peers, hence he committed himself to servent-leadership. His leadership roles as a Student Councillor and Assistant Company Sergeant Major of the Boys Brigade provided him with many opportunities for further personal development. Elray treasured the opportunities presented to him and constant looked for more platforms to develop himself and give back to not only his peers and community, but also other less-privileged communities around the world. By actively participating in school events and projects, Elray is able to spread joy and kindness to his peers. Venturing out of school, Elray s strong social values spurred him to contribute to his community, such as his participation in the Chinese New Year Hamper Donation Drive for the Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged from 2012 to Elray also ventured even further out of his comfort zone to support the less-privileged people in the world. He planned for and embarked on a service-learning trip to Pathum Thani province in Thailand, as well as taught English to lower Primary School students in Malaysia. His positive outlook and thoughtfulness led him to many successes. However, Elray is humbled by his experience and attributes his success also to the unwavering support and confidence from his parents, teachers and friends. 13
