1 TOP 100 BOOKS TEACHERS CHOSE TO COPY IN SCHOOLS 30 September 2016 BACKGROUND Copyright Agency manages a licence scheme that enables teachers to copy and share content from book, journals and other sources. Every year, research company AMR conducts a survey of copying in a sample of schools for Copyright Agency. The results are shared the school authorities, and taken into account in negotiations to set copyright fees paid by the school sector. The data is also used for distribution of fees to authors and publishers. The surveys are conducted on a two year cycle: NSW, ACT, South Australia and Northern Territory in the even years (e.g. 2014, 2016), and Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia in the odd years (e.g. 2013, 2015). There are currently two surveys. One survey records printing, scanning and photocopying in 252 schools over a two-year period, each for a term. The other survey records electronic use (e.g. uploading to a server, downloading, ing) in 100 schools each year, for a four week period. 1 LISTS OF PUBLICATIONS TEACHERS CHOSE TO COPY IN SCHOOLS The following lists show, by the number of schools participating in surveys: Top 100 books teachers chose to copy in primary schools (Australia wide) Top 100 books teachers chose to copy in secondary schools (Australia wide) Top 10 books in primary and secondary schools respectively, state by state Top 10 periodicals in primary schools Top 25 periodicals in secondary schools HOW THE LISTS WERE COMPILED The lists were compiled from the data provided by the schools that participated in surveys from 2011 to mid From this data we extracted records that related to publications for which we could identify an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) or ISSN (International Standard Serial Number). We then counted the number of schools in which each book and periodical was copied. 2 1 There have been some changes to survey design over time. For example, in the past printing and scanning were recorded as part of the electronic survey, and a larger number of schools (but not teachers) participated in the photocopying survey. 2 But not the number of pages copied, or the number of copies made, both of which are taken into account for distribution of licence fees.
