2 The citadel of Sigiriya, founded 1,500 years ago by the paricide king Kassapa ( A. D.), is one of the most remarkable creations in the world. The king transformed a 600 foot rock into an impregnable fortrees, either to emulate Kuwera, the lord or wealth who resided upon Mount Alaka, or to counter the fear of a South Indian assisted army led by his brother Moggaliana, the rightful heir to the throne, or both. Even though Sigiriya was inhabited before and after Kassapa, mostly by forest - dwelling monks, its surviving art and architecture are largely secular. Sigiriya was rediscovered after the rock was scaled by two Britishers in 1853, and since the mid 1900's the citadel ahs attracted millions of visitors from all around the world. Today, Sigiriya offers her visitors a gallery of 5 th - century paintings completed with landscaped gardens unrivalled and unmatched by any contemporary citadel in the world. Paintings of 23 damsels, mostly in pairs and usually consisting of a lady and her maid, are fond halfway up the rock. The maidens in the Sigiri murals have long been admired by both the art connoisseur and the average traveler. The citadel of Anuradhapura, the first capital founded by King Pandukabhaya and the seat of government for centuries, is symbolic of the golden era of Sri Lanka. Religious and secular art and architecture, carvings and sculpture, paintings and inscriptions, have survived the elements or over 15 centuries, enabling the traveler to fathom the glory of Anuradhapura during that period. The moonstone, which constitutes the first step to any building of shrine, is to a large extent unique to Sri Lanka, especially decorated type. A message of welcome to the visitor from the four quarters is enshrined in the semicircle of the four animals. Various other types of symbolism have been attributed by art historians; every Buddhist image is symbolic of s specific aspect of the master's teachings or an event in the master's life.

3 Polonnaruwa is the second most ancient city in Sri Lanka and was the seat of power of many Sri Lankan kings. The city holds extremely well preserved ruins of ancient palaces and temples from several different dynasties and is known today to be one of the best planned archeological relic sites in the country, echoing the remains of one of the ancient world s most advanced cities. The museum, ruins and the Minneriya tank situated in close proximity presents an ideal chance for the guests to be familiar with the history and the culture of Srilanka. The wild life and bird enthusiasts can make visits to the Wasgamuwa and Kawudulla parks. The ancient city of Kandy, located in Sri Lanka s centre, is known to be the country s cultural capital and an example of Sri Lanka s rich cultural heritage. This beautiful city in the hills is ideal for relaxing and reflecting. The City is home to the tooth relic of the Lord Buddha and it is housed in the famous Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Tooth, which attracts thousands to the city every year including devotees as well as visitors who come to marvel at the beautiful architecture of the temple. Kandy is also home to many other old temples and other landmarks, including the amazing Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.
