2 memories for a lifetime The Artist and the Gypsy Collective, Susan Stover and Michelle Fletcher, invite you on an art and textile inspired journey to India exploring all the colors, sights, sounds and spice that make up the unique area of Rajasthan. India pulsates with a spectacular mix of people, traditions and landscapes. Your journey will be with you long after you return home. India is the unexpected. It can be challenging, particularly for the first-time visitor: the poverty is confronting, Indian bureaucracy can be exasperating and the amount of people may turn the simplest task into to a frazzling experience. Everyone finds their nerves frayed at some point; yet this is all a part of India. With the ability to inspire, frustrate, and thrill all at once, adopting a go with the flow attitude is wise. Love it or loathe it, some days both at the same time. An open mind, a warm heart and a sense of adventure is essential while in traveling in India. To embrace India s unpredictability is to embrace her soul. overview We will stay in locally owned mid-range hotels and heritage haveli s where we can, all places are clean, friendly and have western washrooms! It is ambiance and friendliness we are looking for where we may meet locals as well. Top end hotels are far removed from this and just full of foreigners. Our trip will take us to the cities of Jaipur, Pushkar and Udaipur while visiting smaller villages along the way. Traveling in vans, our road trip will travel west and south through Rajasthan, the land of the Maharajahs. Where there is structure, there is also flow, so that we are open to embrace the unexpected and leave space for adventure and spontaneity. Jaipur, known as the Pink City, is the capital of Rajasthan. It is a colorful, bustling and an exciting historical city. After several days and nights in Jaipur, we push on to the holy city of Pushkar, a Hindu pilgrimage town. It is situated on a lake and borders the Thar Desert. This city has many temples, ghats (stone staircases where pilgrims bathe), and is alluringly mystic. Our journey s end is in Udaipur which is known for it s romantic setting of palaces, forts, and temples that overlook picturesque lakes and is filled with natural charm. 3 planned activities a day workshop with traditional artisans block printing learning about mud resist and indigo visiting villages and artisans producing tie dye, embroidery and other textile techniques a day with a local textile expert visiting traditional markets, ancient sites, antique markets, places of worship touring museums and galleries visiting a paper making factory and a block making village experiencing an ayurvedic massage boat ride on a picturesque lake hunting for supplies and materials for creating infamous rickshaw ride indulging in local cuisine all this and more! creating As well as sharing her knowledge of the textile techniques we will be exploring, Susan will be leading workshops on creating different types of patterns, personal motifs and designs and how we can use these in our art. Michelle will be guiding you on keeping a travel journal filled with field notes, writing, sketching, mark making and collage. Photographing and capturing images for our journals, memories and inspirations for our art will be part of our days. Discussions on finding your passion, inspiration and unique voice and daily prompts will inspire you to create in new ways. All this and other fun projects we have planned. For us, it s all about the journey discovery, adventure, connections, creations and inspirations along the way. Through our workshops and gatherings, we desire to create community and work collectively with local artisans and businesses. Our intention is to taste and savor what each location offers by staying as close to the ground as possible in unique places around the globe. We seek to support local artisans by learning from them whenever possible. By immersing ourselves in different cultures we get to experience the richness of techniques and materials of various art forms indigenous to each area and bring that inspiration back home to our own studios. Susan Stover (aka The Artist) I am an artist with a passion for textiles, patterns and objects made by traditional techniques. I love mystery, ritual, history and art that exudes these qualities. Travel enables me to experience new sights, sounds, textures and colors of other places and to filter these inspirations into my work. Teaching some of these traditional, cross-cultural techniques, I feel a connection with people of other cultures, past and present, as well as being part of a continuum of artists handing down and sharing knowledge of processes that have been used for centuries. susanstover.com Michelle Fletcher (aka The Gypsy) I am a visual artist, curious adventurer and soul sister. Throughout my life, I have worked through many creative mediums: stylist, designer and photographer.
