1 Phonics Phase 6 Meeting Monday 14 th March 2016

2 Aims of the session: A greater understanding of the 6 phonic phases. An understanding of the content of Phase 6 of Letters and Sounds. An understanding of some of the Queen s Drive approaches to spelling and reading during Phase 6. An increased understanding of the vocabulary that we use during the Phase 6 phonics sessions.

8 What is Phase 6 of Letters and Sounds?

9 Phase 6 Letters and Sounds Should be done in Year 2 Revision of alternative graphemes from Phase 5, particularly vowel sounds. Spelling rules for simple past tense. E.g. Yesterday, I walked down the street. Spelling rules for adding prefixes and suffixes. E.g. tidy untidy happy happier Finding the tricky part of spellings and using strategies (such as mnemonics, analogies and syllables) to memorise these parts.

10 Adding the s and es suffix to create plurals. E.g. boy boys church churches Using the apostrophe for contraction. E.g. do not don t Forming comparative and superlative adjectives. 53 The Camping Trip Eight friends are getting ready to go on a camping trip. They have to pack lots of things into their bags. They take: shoe boot hanky sandwich torch trainer camera hairbrush shirt box glove spoon penny dish fork address Help the friends write a list of what they need to take. Remember, because there are 8 of them, the nouns will need to be turned into plurals.

54 Children put the pieces of the puzzle together. Each part matches to the next part (e.g. sad matches with sadder ). When the puzzle is complete the children identify the seven spelling mistakes. They have to use their spelling knowledge from the previous lessons to ascertain where the mistakes are. E.g. funnyer is incorrect because the y should be changed to an i before adding the er suffix.
