1 BIO 103: ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE: ECOSYSTEMS AND MAN SYLLABUS LECTURE/LAB HOURS/CREDITS: 3/3/4 CATALOG DESCRIPTION Prerequisite: RDG 099 Introduction to College Reading III The impact of human activities on ecosystems will be explored. Topics will include fundamentals of ecology, how ecosystems function, conservation of plants and animals, overpopulation and world food/hunger problems. Lab experiences focus on natural resource monitoring and ecological investigations. TEXTBOOK AND COURSE MATERIALS It is the responsibility of the student to confirm with the bookstore and/or their instructor the textbook, handbook and other materials required for their specific course and section. Humanistic Perspective Students will analyze works in the fields of art, history, music, or theater; literature; philosophy and/or religious studies; and/or will gain competence in the use of a foreign language Historical Perspective Students will understand historical events and movements in World, Western, non-western or American societies and assess their subsequent significance. Global and Cultural Students will understand the importance of a global perspective and culturally diverse peoples. Ethical and Action Students will understand ethical issues and situations. 3 3 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: BIO 103 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE: ECOSYSTEMS AND MAN Successful completion of BIO 103 will help students: 1. Use some of the vocabulary, tools, and techniques relevant to environmental science. 2. Comprehend complex environmental topics, data, and information. 3. Take a scientific approach to problems. 4. Comprehensively research an environmental issue or topic. 5. Continue to stay current on developments in environmental science throughout life. 6. Utilize environmental data in meaningful ways. 7. Develop your ideas, philosophy, and values on the relationships between living things, yourself and your planet. 8. Adopt behaviors, practices and skills that help maintain the integrity of the environment and sustainability. 9. Better observe, understand, and appreciate the natural world around you. 10. Enjoy the environment and pursue active involvement with it. 11. Communicate effectively orally and in written form on environmental issues to a variety of audiences.
