1 RELATED ARTS DEPARTMENT **Related Arts classes expose students to equipment and activities that require safety in the classroom. Students who work in an unsafe manner will not be permitted to enroll in an advanced class without the expressed consent of the instructor. DRAFTING/ARCHITECTURE INTRODUCTION TO DRAFTING AND COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN (FULL YEAR) 9-12 This course introduces students to the basics of drafting on a computer (CAD). Topics covered include: engineering terminology; how to think, work and communicate like an engineer; non-verbal communication using Orthographic Projection and 3D-Isometric Drawings; creating bids and how to sell a product to customers; career-oriented group projects; meeting with Industry guest speakers; how to solve engineering and construction problems; bridge building techniques; how a car engine works and using CAD to draw engine designs; drawing floor plans using Auto CAD as an introduction to Architecture; the importance of working within a Learning Community; and honing 21 st century skills. Students will decipher and complete Auto-CAD engineering drawings at their own pace. Experience Pro/Engineering software is used to set up and draw 3D Engineering products/parts while developing global solutions for the next generation of technological thinkers. Use student centered learning together with Geometry, Math, Measuring, and Critical Thinking to solve Auto CAD drawing problems. The course includes many guest speakers for college and career exposure, as well as class trips to New York City to view and discuss classic Architectural Designs. Class concludes with drawing floor plans to scale for those interested in Architectural type careers and moving up to Architecture I. State Course #: G ARCHITECTURE I (FULL YEAR) This course is designed to serve as an exploratory course for the serious student who has an interest in a technical career or who plans to make Architectural Drafting a career choice. It is also designed to help future homeowners, homebuilders, or general construction trades-persons. Of greater emphasis is light residential construction. Students will be required to draw plans and specifications for typical homes, which could be built, in our geographical region. Students will use AutoCAD by AutoDesk, Inc. to produce some of their drawings. Construction costs and analysis are an integral part of the course. Upon completion of the course, each student will have designed, developed and drafted an original set of plans with specifications which could be accepted and approved by local planning boards and building inspectors. Students will develop a portfolio containing their drawings that can be used for application to college programs or when interviewing for employment. State Course #: G Prerequisite: Introduction to Drafting and Computer-Aided Design or with MOHS teacher approval. 1
2 ARCHITECTURE II (FULL YEAR) This course is designed to serve the student who has successfully completed two years of drafting and wants to pursue architecture or engineering as a career. It may be considered exploratory for any technically oriented student and can be extremely valuable for the student who wishes to enter the construction or building trades. The course deals mainly with the planning and development of a small or local shopping center, commercial establishments or public buildings. Students are required to draft a set of plans including specifications that are typical for this region. Group planning, design and drafting are essential elements, which teach the value of teamwork. Students will use AutoCAD by AutoDesk, Inc. to produce many of their drawings. Students will continue to develop their portfolio containing their drawings that can be used for application to college programs or when interviewing for employment. State Course #: E Prerequisite: Successful completion of Architecture I ARCHITECTURE III (FULL YEAR) 12 This course is a culmination of the prerequisites. It is designed to teach students to think, work, and communicate like a civil engineer or architect. Students then choose to design a dream business they would like to open. Students implement business techniques of: Business Plan, Expenses, Inventory, Overhead Cost, Payroll, Security, Hiring, Interviewing Employees, Location, Taxes, Management, Financing, Parking, Signage, Storage, Product, Supplies, Advertising, Selling, Pricing, Competition, and Breakeven Analysis to then plan, sketch, and draw in CAD their Businesses: Front, Sides and Rear Elevations, Parking Plan, Electrical Floor Plan, Plumbing Floor Plan, HVAC Floor Plan, Foundation Plan, and Roof Plan all conforming to state, local, and national building codes. Using these plans, students build from foam core a working 3D model of their business at ¼ equal 1 scale. The best of these models are entered into and judged at the Craftsman s Fair in Ledgewood Mall against state-wide competition. ProEngineering Software is used to set up and draw 3D Engineering Products and Parts. The course includes many guest speakers for College and Career Exposure and class trips to New York City and Saint John the Divine s Cathedral to view and discuss classic Architectural Designs. Students continue to develop their portfolio that can be used for application to college programs or when interviewing for employment. State Course #: H Prerequisite: Successful completion of Architecture II ROBOTICS/ENGINEERING ROBOTICS ENGINEERING I (SEMESTER) This course is designed to introduce students to students to the Robotics & the FIRST Tech Challenge platform as it teaches Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Students will use feedback from sensors, applied mathematics, develop mechanical & electrical systems to program their robot to navigate in its environment and complete the FIRST Tech Challenge. Students will have the opportunity to explore robotics engineering through guided research, engineering design process, working in teams, and organize documentation by means of an Engineer s Notebook. 3 ROBOTICS ENGINEERING II (FULL YEAR) This course is built around further developing the skills learned in Robotics I and the FIRST Tech Challenge. In FTC students learn Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills through the hands-on robotics competition. They will learn the engineering process, computer programming and computer assisted design (CAD). They will also gain skills in communication, public speaking and team work. Students in this course will be able to compete in the FIRST Tech Challenge competition. The cornerstone of the class involves solving engineering design problems. The teacher is placed in the role of a facilitator/mentor, the student in the role of the project manager/problem solver. For more information about the FIRST Tech Challenge, please visit State Course #: G Prerequisite: Successful completion of Robotics I, Physics FIRST CP/H ROBOTICS III (FULL YEAR) After completing Robotics II, students will then be able to engage in the selection, design, and implementation of an underwater ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) through the MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) program. The MATE program requires students to think of themselves as entrepreneurs and transform their teams into companies that manufacture, market, and sell products. In addition to engineering their ROVs, the students are required to prepare technical reports, poster displays, and engineering presentations that are delivered to working professionals who serve as competition judges. For more information about the MATE program please visit State Course #: E Prerequisite: Successful completion of Robotics II ROBOTICS ENGINEERING CAPSTONE (FULL YEAR) Robotics Engineering Capstone is for students that looking to continue to develop their skills learned through exploratory independent projects. Students work in teams to design and develop an original solution to a valid open-ended technical problem by applying the engineering design process. They will perform research to choose, validate, and justify a technical problem. After carefully defining the problem, teams design, build, test their solutions and report on their results. This experience sets the groundwork for future success in traditional four-year college/university engineering programs, community college, trade school, apprenticeship, or military options. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Robotics I, II & III INDUSTRIAL DESIGN (SEMESTER) Industrial Design is a project-based course that covers modern tools and methods for product design and development. The cornerstone is a project in which teams of management, engineering, and industrial design students conceive, design and prototype a physical product. Class sessions are conducted in workshop mode and employ cases and hands-on exercises to reinforce the key concepts. Topics include identifying customer needs, concept generation, product architecture, industrial design, and design-for-manufacturing. Prerequisite: Successful completion of any of the following courses - Composition & Design, Foundation of 3D, Graphics Design I, and Robotics I 3
4 INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING (FULL YEAR) Credits Wondering what it means to be an engineer? This course is designed for students who are considering a career in engineering or engineering technology. A description of what engineering is, what an engineer does, and educational requirements for pursuit of an engineering degree will be discussed. A complete discussion of current engineering fields of practice and potential career opportunities will be explored. Students will use 3D solid modeling design software to solve proposed problems and will learn how to document their work and communicate their solutions. The major focus of the Introduction to Engineering course is to expose students to the engineering careers, the design process, research and analysis, teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering standards, and technical documentation. FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES BASIC FOODS (SEMESTER) This course is an introduction to basic food selection and preparation, meal planning and food service. Opportunities for employment in the food industry are discussed. Students will use the food laboratory for food preparation on a regular basis. Yearly field trips may include the Sugarloaf Craft Festival, a tour of Whole Foods, and a Japanese Hibachi Restaurant. FOODS II AMERICAN REGIONAL CUISINE (SEMESTER) Available This course is an introduction to the cuisine of the seven Regions of the United States. Students will become aware of the foods that we consider to be Native to our country. As the students explore each region they will develop an understanding of how climate, geography and culture all affect Regional Food Choices. Students will celebrate holidays and prepare various recipes and customary foods from each area of the country. This class would be a second level class. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Basic Foods FOODS II INTERNATIONAL CUISINE (SEMESTER) Available Students will learn about the methods of preparing foods from countries within the regions of Latin America, Europe, Asia, and regional cuisine of the United States. Students will gain an appreciation for the culture and cuisine of such countries as Mexico (tacos), Spain (empanadas), Italy (homemade Italian bread), and Denmark (Danish pastries). Students will use the food laboratory for food preparation on a regular basis. Yearly field trips may include the Sugarloaf Craft Festival, a tour of Whole Foods, and a Japanese Hibachi Restaurant. 5 FOODS III ADVANCED CULINARY This is a third level Foods Course. Successful completion of Basic Foods and Foods II is a pre-requisite for this course. This class is for the student who enjoys cooking and wants to expand their culinary knowledge. Students will explore specialty techniques and ingredients used to make appetizers, salads, soups, sauces, breads, pastries, desserts, and more. This course is a great stepping stone for students who might be thinking about continuing in the field of the Culinary Arts. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Foods II CHILD CARE SURVEY (SEMESTER) This course introduces students to the world of children. Students will explore child growth and development, with a focus on infants, toddlers and preschool children. All aspects of family life and parenthood will be discussed. Topics will be presented with an emphasis on family roles and responsibilities in today s modern society. Students will interact on a regular basis with simulated infants who respond to your gentle care with delighted coos, and cry when they experience needs. This course is appropriate for students who would like to become pediatricians, teachers, child care workers or anyone who will be interacting with children on a regular basis. Students taking Child Care Survey will be allowed to join food courses field trips. State Course #: G WOODS BASIC WOODS (SEMESTER) This course is an exploratory program that will expose the students to the basic forms of wood construction. It contains identification and use of portable and stationary woodworking equipment types of wood and finishing products, always stressing general shop and machine safety. Instruction will be given in product planning, design and material using two different textbooks as well as a computer investigation. Students are responsible for four to six class projects, eight textbook units that will be assigned during the school year, and unit/textbook quizzes. Students will be required to provide certain finishing materials such as points and in some cases a hot glue gun and glue. Information will be provided by the instructor during the course of the school year. State Course #: G ADVANCED WOOD (SEMESTER) This course is designed for students who are interested in learning advanced woodworking skills. This course includes advanced woodworking trends and techniques, wood identification, planning, designing and project layouts. Students are required to locate one project design per marking period. Students are to download the construction plans for their project and develop a building and material list. Students are also required to provide their own materials for their projects.
