1 Grammar Handout 4 ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS I Look at the house. Is this a good place to live? Why or why not? What do you think is important when looking for an apartment? Read the ad below. Do you think this place is suitable for students? Would you like to live in this place? Why/Why not? WAKEFIELD HOUSE museums are just minutes away. Are you looking for a nice neigbourhood with safe quiet streets? Do you love the big sunny rooms and high ceilings in old buildings but want modern appliances too? Apartments in Wakefield House offer all these and more. Here is your place to relax completely after a long hard day at school or work. We are located in a peaceful area near famous Lake Forest Park. The neighbourhood is like a small village. Your neighbours are always there to help you. And it will be easy for you to go to work or school. Exciting nightlife, shopping and It sounds very expensive, right? But it s not! A charming one-bedroom apartment is surprisingly affordable. 2 3. b the people 4. a nightlife c. safe d. peaceful The words in COLUMN B are adjectives and they define the nouns in COLUMN A. ADJECTIVES Adjectives describe or give more information about nouns. An adjective usually goes right before the noun it describes. An adjective can also go after a non-action verb such as; be appear become smell get taste look sound seem feel Participial adjectives are adjectives that end in ing or ed. They come from verbs. Participial adjectives often describe feelings. use the ing form for someone or something that causes a feeling. use the ed form for the person who has the feeling. The most commonly used ing and ed adjectives are: * annoyed / annoying * bored / boring * confused / confusing * disappointed / disappointing * fascinated / fascinating * frightened / frightening * excited / exciting * interested / interesting * relaxed / relaxing * surprised / surprising * tired / tiring * It is a quiet building. adjective noun * The apartment has sunny rooms. adjective noun * The streets are safe. * It sounds expensive. * The people in the neighborhood look friendly. -ing adjective * The apartment is interesting. * My neighbor is annoying. -ed adjective * The interested couple called again. * I am annoyed by his loud music. TASK 3. Maggie and Luis are talking about their neighbor. Read their conversation. Complete it with the correct participial adjective form (-ing or ed) of the verbs in parentheses. MAGGIE: LUIS: What s the matter with Alice? Who knows? She s always 1) annoyed (annoy) about something.

3 MAGGIE: LUIS: MAGGIE: last week. LUIS: MAGGIE: I know, but this time I m really 2) confused (confuse). Why? What s the problem this time? Oh, I thought she was happy. She met an 3) interesting (interest) man Great. Was she 4) interested (interest) in him? I thought so. She said they saw a 5) fascinating (fascinate) movie together. So I thought LUIS: Maybe she was 6) fascinated (fascinate) by the movie, but she was 7) disappointed (disappoint) with the guy. MAGGIE: Maybe. It s hard to tell with Alice. Her moods are often very 8) surprising (surprise). ADVERBS Adverbs describe or give more information about: a) verbs b) adjectives c) other adverbs d) the whole sentence Among some commonly used sentence adverbs are (un)fortunately, probably, obviously, normally, sadly, and (not) surprisingly. * They furnished the apartments beautifully. verb adverb * The apartments are surprisingly affordable. adverb adjective * It is an extremely nice house. adverb adjective * The apartment rented very quickly. adverb adverb * Obviously, you ll have a peaceful life in this neighborhood. Adverbs show how, when, where, or how often something happens. Adverbs of a) manner indicate how b) time indicate when c) place indicate where d) frequency indicate how often things happen * She described the apartment perfectly. * We arrived yesterday. * They have decided to stay here. * She usually rents to students. FORMING ADVERBS Many adverbs end in -ly. More precisely, they are formed by adding -ly to an adjective. The following table shows some examples of how adverbs are formed from adjectives.

4 adjective adverb quick quickly We need a quick decision. You should decide quickly. nice nicely The house looks nice. She decorated the house nicely. quiet quietly They are quiet neighbors. Our neighbors talk quietly. However, not all adverbs end in ly. For example, the adverb form of GOOD is WELL. * Susan is a good pianist. adjective * Susan plays the piano well. adverb A few adjectives and adverbs have the same form. ADJECTIVE late I'm watching the late film. early She travels to work on an early train. hard This exercise is really hard. fast My brother loves fast cars. ADVERB late* My train arrived late, as usual. early The train came early. hard* Jim is a workaholic. He works very hard. fast He drives fast. Adding ly to the adverbs hard and late changes the meaning of these words. The adverb hardly means almost not. The adverb lately means recently. * He hardly speaks in class. (=almost not) * I haven t seen him lately. (=recently) TASK 4. Read the following sentences, and choose the correct explanation for the underlined adverbs. 1. Jane could hardly speak when she heard that she was promoted. (d) 2. If you want to be successful in life, you should work hard. (c) 3. I have had trouble sleeping lately, so I ll start taking sleeping pills. (b) 4. Children shouldn t be out in the streets alone late at night. (a) a. after the usual time b. recently c. with great effort d. almost not

5 Note that some adjectives also end in -ly, such as costly, deadly, friendly, lively, lovely, lonely, and ugly. They cannot be used as ADVERBS. We should use a similar adverb or adverb phrase. * Our neighbors are very friendly people. * Our neighbors welcomed us in a friendly way. TASK 5. Read the following sentences, and decide whether the underlined words are adjectives or adverbs. Then, write ADJ (adjective) or ADV (adverb) next to statement. 1. _ adv _ He came early and waited for the shop to open. 2. _ adj _ The early train leaves just before 6 o clock. 3. _ adv _ She spends 4 hours studying English. She studies hard. 4. _ adj _ It was a hard race but Chimokel won the race. 5. _ adv _ Chimokel runs fast. 6. _ adj _ Nevin Yanıt is a fast runner. 7. _ adj _ I don t want to be late for class. 8. _ adv _ My plane landed late, so I missed the meeting. TASK 6.Put in adjectives or adverbs from the box. early fast friendly hard hardly late lonely I don t like getting up e.g. early so I usually stay in bed too long, and then have to eat breakfast very 1) fast and run for my train. On the train, I read the daily paper because after I get to work, there is no more time for reading. The boss is nice, but she wants us to work very 2) hard, and I often have to stay 3) late to finish everything. There is a nice new secretary in the office. I 4) hardly know her. The only thing I know about her is that she is a nice person. She always gives me a 5) friendly smile when I arrive. She hasn t been here for a long time. I don t know whether she is 6) lonely in this city. TASK 7. Read this notice about an apartment for rent near the local university. Underline the adjectives and circle the adverbs. Then draw an arrow ( ) from the adjective or adverb to the word it is describing.

6 Students! Are you looking for a special place to live? Come to 140 Grant Street, Apt. B. This apartment is absolutely perfect for serious students who are looking for a quiet neighborhood, just 15 minutes from campus. This lovely apartment is in a new building. It is a short walk to the bus stop. The express bus goes directly into town. At night the bus hardly makes any stops at all. You can walk peacefully through the wonderful parks on your way home. The rent is very reasonable. Call for an appointment: Don t wait! This apartment will rent fast. TASK 8. Circle the correct words to complete Maggie s letter to her brother.
