1 Year 5 Geography Expectations Year 5 Geography Knowledge, Skills and Understanding Geographical Enquiry Physical Geography Human Geography Geographical Knowledge Can they collect information about a place and use it in a report? Can they find possible answers to their own geographical questions? Can they plan a journey to a place in another part of the world, taking account of distance and time? Can they explain why many cities of the world are situated by rivers? Can they explain how a location fits into its wider geographical location; with reference to physical features? Can they explain why people are attracted to live by rivers? Can they explain how a location fits into its wider geographical location; with reference to human and economical features? Can they locate and name the main countries in South America on a world map and atlas? Year 5 (Challenging) Can they work out an accurate itinerary detailing a journey to another part of the world? Can they explain what a place (open to environmental and physical change) might be like in the future taking account of physical features? Can they report on ways in which humans have both improved and damaged the environment? Can they begin to recognise the climate of a given country according to its location on the map? GEOGRAPHICAL STUDY and FIELD WORK Suggest suitable questions for a field work study Rank information found into order of importance Come to accurate conclusions, using information Make careful measurements - e.g. rainfall, noise level, distance Collect statistics about people and places Begin to use a range of graphs, including pie charts
2 MAPS Work out a journey time, using their knowledge of time zones Use and understand simple scale KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Begin to understand geographical pattern e.g. industry by a river Describe and begin to explain patterns and physical and human changes Describe how change can lead to similarities between different places Justify own viewpoint or decision, and use new information to adapt their own viewpoint Autumn Term Why Is Brazil in the News Again? KS2 Geography: Locate the world s countries, using maps to focus on South America and concentrating on their key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities. What do you already know about Brazil? What fruits and other natural resources is Brazil famous for? Which famous cities in Brazil attract tourists and why? What can you find out about one of Brazil s neighbouring countries? Can you design and create a collage of Brazilian symbols? Why is Brazil famous for its dancing? What can you find out about the street children of Brazil? What can you find out about a famous Brazilian? Reflection: The children to host a Brazil day for their parents.
3 Spring Term - Why is the Rainforest so important to us all? How can you create your own class rainforest? Where are rainforest located and what are their main features? Why are rainforests often in the news and what can we do to help? What can you find out about an endangered animal that lives in the rainforest? How important is the Amazon to the South American rainforests? Can you create a print using the large leaves of rainforest plants as your inspiration? How would you survive in the rainforest? Reflection: Present a documentary on a day in the rainforest
4 Summer Term What is so special about the USA? KS2 Geography: Locate the world s countries, using maps to focus on North America and concentrating on their key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities. What would you ask the president of the USA? Why is New York one of the world s most visited cities? Can you carry out your own research on one of the American states? Using the art of Andy Warhol, can you recreate his work using a famous American as your subject? Who were the original Americans? What can you find out about the sports Americans play? How can you create your own silent movie? What do you know about the climate of the USA? Reflection: Children to create a documentary which explains why they should visit the USA.
