Course Description Course Description Prerequisites Course Materials Class Policies Weekly Topics Course Outcomes Grading Criteria Credits s This course explores theoretical and practical issues in the explanations of ethical options and decisions in relational, organizational and mass communication contexts. Case studies, practical analysis, and current ethical dilemmas in communication are investigated from multiple theoretical perspectives. Course Prerequisite COM280 Theory Course Materials

Class Policies: According to the Regis University Bulletin, plagiarism is "presenting as one's own, the ideas words, or products of another"(regis University Bulletin, , 47). A paper that uses the content of an original author but merely re-words or reorganizes that paper is a plagiarism of the work. Minor modifications, sentences, original ideas or opinions, and paraphrases that do not reference the work from which it was taken are plagiarism. Material taken from a source, though adequately referenced, may not be guilty of plagiarism but may be guilty of failing to demonstrate original thought, critical thinking, analysis, or synthesis with regard to the assignment s intentions. All suspected cases of plagiarism will be further investigated and appropriate actions will be taken. The following tips have been provided by the Department of Faculty & Curriculum: These are some guidelines to help you understand and avoid plagiarism: Read all the materials, put away the sources, then write (without looking at the sources) your interpretation of what you have read. After doing this, go back and add sources to support or refute information you have included. A good general rule is to use only one citation per page of the student's own writing, and to use only about 20% direct quotations in relationship to 80% paraphrases (a ten page paper ideally would include about 10 citations, 2 of which are direct quotations and 8 of which are paraphrases). Direct quotations should be used only if statistical information is included or if the author can say it better than the student can. Refer to your APA manual to determine the proper formatting for the citation/paraphrasing you choose to use. For special assistance for students with tutoring, counseling, or other student services please refer to the Student Guidebook. If you have a documented disability requiring academic adjustments for this class, please contact Disability Services ( ). They will review your documentation with you and help determine appropriate, reasonable accommodations. Following this meeting please make an appointment with your instructor, to discuss your accommodation request in light of the course requirements. You may self-disclose and request an academic

3 adjustment any time during the term. However, I strongly recommend that you do so as soon as possible because accommodations are not provided retroactively and adequate lead-time is required. By the end of the course you should be able to: Examine your own set of personal and professional ethics. Recognize the 11 different perspectives relating to ethical communication analysis. Discuss the complexities involved in determining whether a situation is ethical or not. Identify the ethical issues that arise in the interpersonal communication process. Describe the ethical decisions that occur within organizations. Articulate the ethical implications of mass communication. Define rhetoric and discuss what types of ethical issues occur within this area of study. Describe the ethical issues that arise within intercultural communication. Define the feminist perspective and describe the ethical issues it attempts to address. Describe the ethical issues concerning both Primary and Secondary research.

4 Grading Criteria Please refer to the extended assignments page for a detailed listing of all assignments due each week. The following is only a summary of the assignments and grading criteria. Written Work All written work will be evaluated for organization, content, grammar and mechanics, integration of course information and production quality. Please remember to cite resources when paraphrasing and using direct quotes. Any additional requirements will be posted under the written assignment. Participation Forum participation is a key part of this class. You are expected to post and respond to forums on a regular basis. Postings on the forum take the place of classroom discussion. The more you post, the more engaged you are in the class. The more you participate, the more you learn. Posting to the minimal requirements will earn you minimal participation points. Postings should be well thought out, minimally one paragraph, and opinions must be supported with theory and examples. The forum postings are read by your facilitator, but not always responded to, unless clarification is needed, or questions are posed. If you your facilitator questions or clarification, expect a response within 48 hours. The instructor will provide more detailed information about grading criteria related to online forums.
